Weekend WTF: Just Leave The Fruit Alone!

by Erika Nicole Kendall

Whose bright idea was this?!

Sent in by Carla... she apparently wanted me to have a heart attack.

It’s fruit. It has its own taste. It has its own purposes. It doesn’t need you injecting “flavors” (short for “chemical substances we created in a lab”) into it. There is a benefit to learning how things taste in their natural sense. Just… don’t do this to fruit. It didn’t do anything to you!

Alright, tell the truth: who has bought one of these? Let me know, so I can come raid your pantry.

Y’all gon’ make me chain myself to all the apple trees out here!

That is… o.O….beyond gross. And why?! Why mess with perfectly good fruit like that? I’m with you in that apples have a taste all their own, which is good already. I can’t say I’ve seen, or eaten, one of these. I have to admit I’ve had the canned bread you posted about awhile back, which was…interesting. These would rank between the canned bread and spam on the gross factor list for me. I think what ticks me off about the apples are they’re being marketed as ‘fresh’ fruit.

Erika, please tell me what part of the game is this?!?! A bubblegum flavored apple?? That’s “100% natural, no added sugar”? You know what’s all natural? An apple flavored apple! If you couldn’t already tell, I got all types of pissed when I saw this. Of all the foolishness! About to have me go to the supermarket and by some apples, regular, good old (gala, my fave) apples in protest.

Is this for real??
Everything is possible in this country… really!

Franken-apples yuk!!

Rai June 9, 2012 - 12:29 PM

I bought one of those Grapple things once, grape flavored apples. I was just curious. I didn’t really want a re-flavored apple. Anyhow, that was quite possibly one of the most foul-tasting things I have ever had in my life. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??? It was horrible. It wasn’t like actual grape flavor (but then, when is it ever?), it was that nasty, purple-grape. I can’t even imagine these other flavors. Bubble gum?? Urgh.

I saw these in my local stop and shop too… Damn near passed out! Sad this is too that some mom will justify that crap as “but it’s an apple-it’s healthy!” Smh

I mean, I guess getting fruit into folks any way is good? Except… why not just eat pomegranates and grapes?

Chemical companies must be really bored.

Totally agree with you! I saw these in the supermarket this week and thought they looked gross.

I saw this nonsense at my local store. What the #&*@ indeed! Sadly I’m not surprised.

Brandy June 9, 2012 - 2:06 PM

This makes me want to claw my eyes out! First of all children don’t need this, secondly if I want to “jazz” up my fruit…I make a fruit medley w/o all the extra sugar.

Chene June 9, 2012 - 2:09 PM

MY coworker had one of these the other day!! I was in shock. Flavored apples?? What about the uh…”apple” flavor it already has!

Mecca June 9, 2012 - 2:09 PM

What in the Sam-hell is that! Bubble gum flavored apples!? Seriously! This is why we started our own garden in 2012. Because you just cannot trust food manufacturers anymore. HFCS in milk, pink slime in meat, and now bubble gum flavored apples. They only way to increase health, prevent dis-ease and increase vitality is to grow your own food. As a city girl who had a history of killing any plant I ever received; growing my own food seemed like a futile activity to take on. But 6 months later it’s growing and we are moving away from store bought foods.

I have never heard of this and i think its a horrible idea! Gross! No need to raid my pantry…not for that anyway!!

Whitney June 9, 2012 - 2:18 PM

That doesn’t even sound good! Bubble gum flavored apples??? My kids wouldn’t even like that.

Joy June 9, 2012 - 2:41 PM

LOL, I bought one about a month ago but only because I was like WTF and my curiosity got the best of me. I saw it in the store and read the nutritional value to see how exactly they “flavored” it. But nothing stood out so I bought it just to try it. It was good. Had like a candy apple taste to it. But I have no plans to buy it again. Still wondering HOW and WHY they would flavor an apple. Cauliflower that tasted like cheesy mash potatoes…ok maybe I might be on board with that 🙂

Adaobi June 9, 2012 - 3:20 PM

How the hell is “bubblegum flavor” 100% natural? Someone’s got to explain that one to me.

Jessica June 9, 2012 - 4:10 PM

One of my friends bought one a few weeks ago when we went camping. She saw it in the store and just had to know what it was and how it tasted. She is a chronic label reader and the listed ingredients just didn’t add up to her. We have fun tasting and guessing but that’s about all it came down to…none of us would ever actually buy them on a regular basis…or even occasionally!

wtf that i just gross. I think American citizens should go after the FDA and make new rules for our food. This is getting out of hand smh

DSweetone June 9, 2012 - 7:32 PM

Oh noooooo-they’ve corrupted the fruit too?!!!!!! Bubble gum flavored apples?!!!!!!!!! How disturbing!!!!!!!!

Vee June 11, 2012 - 8:46 AM

Bubblegum flavored apples eww….

Apple has natural sugars already.

Gillian June 9, 2012 - 10:21 PM

What about the labelling, ‘Ready To Eat Healthy Snack’, which is so far from the truth. The sad thing is that uninformed individuals may be drawn in and if there wasn’t a market, they couldn’t sell it.

Marcia June 9, 2012 - 11:30 PM

My coworker brought one of these to work, she said it was pretty good but it didn’t interest me. I wonder exactly how they get the flavor in.

Doreen G. June 10, 2012 - 10:52 AM

Kids already Love…plain ole’ apples! No need for this foolishness! smh

Jaida June 10, 2012 - 5:37 PM

Now that’s just gross. If I wanna add a different flavor to my fruit, I’ll buy some fruit dip or use peanut butter. These companies have gone too far!

TeaJae June 10, 2012 - 8:04 PM

I’ve never seen such crap before, how horrid. OMGoodness this is wrong on so many levels. I would pimp slap someone in the store if they tried to even GIVE me ones of this. Ewwwwwww

Tashsukura June 10, 2012 - 11:21 PM

I don’t need flavored fruit lol I need cheaper fresh fruit omg!!!!

Thought's Daughter June 11, 2012 - 9:32 AM

They just can’t leave nature alone, huh? *smh*

seejanesweat June 11, 2012 - 4:03 PM

I guess this goes along with Chicken Charlie and his need to fry everything and sell it at the county fair from kool-aid, to now cereal. http://www.chickencharlies.com/
Gross

lynaya June 11, 2012 - 7:03 PM

I’m still puzzled by “100% natural no sugar added”….how? Are high fructose corn syrup and aspartame not considered sugar?

BalancingJane June 14, 2012 - 2:48 PM

Eww. I could not imagine how gross a bubblegum flavored apple would be. Bubblegum flavored bubblegum is already a bit much for me, and you don’t swallow that.

You don’t happen to have any shots of the ingredients list, do you? I am really side-eyeing that “no sugar added” claim.

Mo Smith June 26, 2012 - 5:05 PM

Now there are some things that you just shouldn’t mess with and fruit is one of them. Fruit is already delicious. If a child doesn’t eat a particular fruit then introduce another one, but don’t give them altered fruit! My son’s favorite food group is fruit. He’s been sneaking and eating all of the fruit since he was 2!
