Weekend WTF: The Most “Unclean” Food I’ve Ever Heard Of In My Life

by Erika Nicole Kendall

Alright, BGG2WLers, fess up: who’s gonna place the first order?

Some of us celebrate spring with a major cleaning of the house. Others add pastels to their wardrobe.

Yes. Eggs soaked in the urine of young schoolboys.

In the Eastern China city of Dongyang, they eat “virgin boy eggs” — hard-boiled eggs simmered in urine, according to Reuters.

Residents praise the local delicacy for its ability to prevent colds, increase circulation and boost vitality.

“If you eat this, you will not get heat stroke. These eggs cooked in urine are fragrant,” said Ge Yaohua, 51, who owns one of the more popular “virgin boy eggs” stalls. “Our family has them for every meal. In Dongyang, every family likes eating them.”

Vendors collect buckets of urine from from local schools and homes in order to make the unusual broth.

“It’s so delicious that I can eat 10 eggs a day,” a woman surnamed Liu toldShanghai Daily. “I am addicted,” she said.

“Virgin boy eggs” have been a springtime staple for centuries in Dongyang.

The eggs are soaked in the urine and then heated over a stove. Then they are taken out of the shells and put back in the urine to soak. This routine continues while new urine is being poured. It takes an entire day to make a batch.

Wu Yunhua at Dongyang Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine told the Daily that the urine “diminishes the internal heat of the human body.”

Now, it’s been a long-known fact that drinking your own urine can cool your temperature… but still. A “delicacy?”

This is a different kind of unclean.

What’s the most “unique” kind of dish you’ve heard of around the world?

It does sound really strange…. I know some people drink their own urine for “health” benefits.

I love watching Bizarre Foods, and while there’s a lot to choose from, Andrew Zimmern’s trip to Spain where baby squid cooked in its own ink is a delicacy comes to mind.

Just plain weird.

Actually urine is sterile when it leaves the body so I guess that makes it okay, but still I could never be that hungry.

It’s not about urine being sterile, though – Chinese schools ask school aged boys (who, I’m sorry to say, are not the cleanest folk on the planet) to urinate in a bucket. That is how the urine is collected. The eggs are soaked in the bucket of urine, and then heated over a stove. And, while you might possibly maybe kinda sorta could argue that any impurities that would come from urine being collected in a “urine bucket” from questionably clean orifices might be boiled out from the stove, it’s still mad gross. ROFL

Wow

People keep saying that urine is sterile, yet it counts as body waste. There’s a reason your pee cup is handled with gloves! No need to cook with it! Whatever it has in it, I’m sure it can be found in food!
:/

Just one question, If urine is so good for you…why does your body excrete it?? Hmmm & YUCK

Cultural & culinary differences can definitely be strange.

Balut comes to mind. Boiled eye complete with yolk and duck embryo. It was definitely a WTF moment when I first heard about it.

I believe that what comes out should not go back in. And is it THAT hot in China? They say it lowers body temp but what happened to using a fan?

Oh my, that must be the most gross thing I have ever heard of!
nasty!

WTF indeed…

I keep hearing that urine is sterile but when you have a UTI, it contains puss, bacteria and can even contain blood if your kidneys are not working properly and other decidedly un-sterile contaminants. This is just plain gross. I’ll pass thanks!
