Video Vault: CBS 60 Minutes Asks, “Is Sugar Toxic?”

by Erika Nicole Kendall

You already know what I have to say.

However…pay extra-special attention to around the 10:50 mark. Lots of valuable info there for an emotional eater.

I’m also highly – highly – amused by the dialogue in the sugar cane field.

Tractors in the background? Fields of green leaves? You’ve got to be kidding. THat shirt didn’t even look like it fit him, let alone like he actually went out to a store, said “Oh, this looks good” and bought it himself. Staged, staged, staged. All that staging, and couldn’t prepare any answers. Sad.

“To say that the majority of the American buying public is going to eliminate sweeteners from their diet… I don’t think… gets us there.” Of course not, if they’re all mostly addicted to it.

Thoughts?

Hey there –

I’ve been slowly eliminating a lot of bad foods from my diet including sugar. I’ve substituted soda for sparkling water but I’ve noticed the recent pepsi commercials. Supposedly, they have reduced the sugar by 60%. I guess people are starting to take notice about the dangers of sugar. I’m not sure that I’ll start to drink Pepsi again but its a good step.

Pepsi (and a lot of others) are hoping that no one reads the labels. Pepsi Next (the 60% less sugar product that you mention). That and the other “zero calorie but not diet drinks” are replacing what was “sugar” with Aspartame.
(see here:CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CARAMEL COLOR, NATURAL FLAVOR, PHOSPHORIC ACID, SODIUM CITRATE, CAFFEINE, POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVES FRESHNESS), ASPARTAME, CITRIC ACID, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, SUCRALOSE. from here:http://www.pepsicobeveragefacts.com/print_infobyproduct.php?bf=1051&b=1000&pf=9067&pu=1026&s=12) So not really better than a diet soda unless you just like the taste.

Side note: what is “natural flavor” in the context of an unnatural product?

On aspartame.

The short answer to your side note: not very natural at all. It can be anything… even the anal glands of beaver. *whistle*

Oh, that’s good to know about Pepsi Next. I’ll be sure to stay away.

Yes,
I am trying to cut down my sugar intake. Even though I only use organic raw honey and organic sugar. But I need to consume less extra sugar. I am cutting down. Lastly I had cut out high fructose corn syrup but its in everything especially if you eat out like its in the food at most restaurants. I wish they would get rid of it altogether.

Anyone find it interesting that Pfizer sponsored this?
