The #bgg2wlarmy Weekly Recap: August 16, 2014

by Erika Nicole Kendall

I started doing Weekly Recaps in May for one week…and then slacked on my pimpin’ for three whole months after that.

Embarrassing.

But I think it’s so important, especially now, that we have a space to dialogue with one another and share and express care and support. This week has been difficult and awful for us all, and being able to encourage and support one another is important.

What’s Most Important

Missouri, my empathy, my support, my love, and my energy goes out to y’all right now. The pain of Michael Brown’s death will forever change that city, and my only hope is that you all (we all) can heal, love, and support one another in these times.

Also, rest in peace to Robin Williams, and my condolences to everyone who knew and loved him and his work. As I said on FB, when you’re dealing with depression in the life of someone you love, hearing about one of your favorite celebrities succumbing to it doesn’t make it any easier.

Where I’m Going

My bed. I’m still worn out from July. I’ll be here all week, thanks.

I did manage to do something to my hair – and, by something, I mean poof it out – and take a selfie. Trust me, that’s a rarity.

What I’ve Written

For EBONY.com, I shared my thoughts on letting a world of photoshopped photos color your perspective of your own fitness goals. In other words, look at images in media as art – not “a goal.”

On the Blog

This week, we talked about hair and whether or not losing weight can result in hair loss. We also discussed sugar and why it’s the damn devil. In this week’s essay for the self-care series, we discussed what freedom from emotional eating would and should look like. I’m also going to drop in here a link to last week’s guide to buying activewear for the low-low. Gotta save coins in every way we can, girl.

What I’m Reading

Alice Goffman’s On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City, as well as Nancy Appleton’s Suicide by Sugar are on the roster right now. I’m plotting out something big, and it’s gonna require a ton of reading on my part. Oy.

Comments of the Week

Non-Scale Victories

I joined a gym again! Not because I can’t work out at home, but because I can’t work out at home. Mini-me constantly interrupts me, Ed wants to have full blown conversations, the dogs want to sniff my butt when I’m squatting… and, to be honest, I missed the weight room! So I’m back in that thing, and lifting like I used to. Couldn’t be happier!

Team Polar also lovingly gifted me with a nice colorful switch on my Polar Loop! And, as an Aquarius, the purple is a welcome change.

What You’re Writing

What are you writing? What are you reading? Tell us about it in the comments!

*Side note: I’m considering doing an Outfit of the Moment, to show how I style my activewear clothes to be more than just activewear (hence the photo of the gray and red outfit up there.) What do you think?

Hello, #bgg2wlarmy!! I added two posts last week and one today.
The first, You ARE Beach Ready, is about taking ownership of where you are on your weight-loss journey. If you haven’t met your goal yet, you can still enjoy life. http://skinnynowwhat.com/2014/08/11/you-are-beach-ready/

Second, Forever an STL Girl, is a break from my usual posts about healthy living. Instead, I reflect on my own instances growing up in North St. Louis County and how frustrated I am, like everyone, with the handling of Mike Brown’s case. http://skinnynowwhat.com/2014/08/14/forever-an-stl-girl/

Lastly, today’s post, Weight-Loss Draft, is about selecting your support team help you along on your weight-loss journey. http://skinnynowwhat.com/2014/08/18/weight-loss-draft/
