Fit Gear Review: The Excalibur Vegetable Spiralizer

by Erika Nicole Kendall

Note: I purchased this spiralizer with my own money, acquired through no affiliation with any outlet. However, if you use my links in this post to purchase your own spiralizer, the brand will pay me a few coins that I can use to purchase and review more items!

One of the latest food trends to catch my eye has been… spiral-cut vegetables to use in place of pasta noodles.

Ideal for people who’ve sworn off pasta (I, for one, have never been capable of making such a declaration) and those who need non-flour-centered options, spiral-cut produce – like, say, zucchini and other kinds of squash – gives you both flavor and a lower-carb, lower-calorie option. Plus, you get raw veggies in your diet. I love raw veggies.

I’d known about shredding and slicing veggies to make noodles for a while, but I’d just always used my exceptionally stellar knife skills and my mandolin. (If you think I’m bragging about my knife skills, that’s sarcasm — remember, I’m the one who sliced off three of my fingertips at the same time before.) You’d always get wide ribbons of veggie goodness, but nothing as fun as…

Made large enough to come with multiple blades to allow for you to shred your chosen veggie into fat or thin noodles, or to make large curly ribbons…

…the Spiralizer by Excalibur also has a little storage bay where you can neatly and safely store the blades you aren’t using.

The Spiralizer comes with four plungers to ensure that your device stays put while you use it, and even while slicing and dicing something as juicy and drippy as cucumbers, the plungers do their job.

When it comes time to move your Spiralizer out of the way, un-plunging the plungers is super easy – just pull the little tab, and it allows enough air inside the plunger to release the device and you’re good.

When it comes to cleaning, the device comes apart quite easily. Considering how you’re working with raw produce, this thing isn’t going to need a supreme scrub down, and it’s a good thing, too – it’s not dishwasher safe, but since I am in a tiny kitchen with no dishwasher (and I whimper a little bit as I type that), that doesn’t bother me too much.

The Spiralizer works pretty easily – see those spikes? You place your veggie on those spikes, and then you press the veggie, as it’s on the spikes, in towards that round metal tube. You spin the handle on the back, while holding the little lever on the bottom (unfortunately, it’s cut off a bit because of my watermark, but it’s under the “black” in the bottom right corner) as you spin. The Spiralizer will automatically take care of the rest, as you continue spinning.

Before you know it, you have gorgeous ringlets – here, I have cucumbers – and, with a little creativity…

You have an incredibly delicious and filling meal full of fresh veggies and whatever your greedy little heart desires.

I couldn’t love this thing more – neat, easy to clean, easy to pull apart and put together, easy to use, easy to store. And, quite frankly, I’m looking forward to seeing how many different dishes I can make with it!

The Excalibur Vegetable Spiralizer currently retails online for $33.99, available at Kohl’s.

Hey my favorite Hippie Boo,

Question for you. I have been debating getting one of these, but had a rather goofy thought – can you boil the vegetables to get them a little softer, texture-wise? Or maybe heating them in the microwave to soften them a little, to go with warm/hot sauces/toppings?

Hey, Big Sis <3

I'd suggest a quick blanching if you'd like them warmed, certainly. That way, they're not mushy and quick to develop a mashed consistency, still have their color, the majority of their nutrition, and are warm enough to go well with warm sauces. And that's specifically working with potatoes or zucchini and other types of squash. The water content of whatever you're working with will be a factor, as well - you couldn't get away with doing that w/cucumber, which is majority water, for example - but, if you wanted it warmed, blanching is the way to go.

I'm not a microwave person, so I couldn't recommend any suggestions on that front. But a quick blanching is a total win. <3

I have one of these! It rocks. It felt like such an indulgent purchase at the time, but it’s been two years and I’m so glad I have it. I’ve used it on zucchini, yam, summer squash, carrots, and tons of other stuff. Totally worth it.

Great photos and reviews of this spiralizer. One of the healthiest (and most fun) investments I’ve made in the kitchen in recent times.

I have been back peddling on getting a spiralizer. I need to watch my carb intake and pasta is my kryptonite. Thanks for your honest review. I’m gonna need that ceviche recipe too lol. Is it in your meal plans?

No – I think I’m going to release that one for free! Stay tuned!
