Yesterday, I asked the #bgg2wlarmy on Twitter (are you following me at @bgg2wl?) a very important question:
RT Currently writing A Black Girl’s Guide to Strength Training. What parts of lifting would you like to see me discuss? What ?s do you have?
— Erika Nicole Kendall (@bgg2wl) March 5, 2015
and received an outpouring of responses, but most interestingly of these was this:
@bgg2wl proper form, how much time should be spent training certain body parts, confidence in a weight room full of annoying men (lol).

Now, the mere mention of developing confidence in the weight room started an entirely different conversation – and you can view that in the storify below (also linked here in case you can’t see it) – but I’m curious. What are your experiences like in the weight room? Do you experience fear? Are you the Alpha Dog? Have you been there and are now an all-star in the weight room? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic – your share might help someone else! And, don’t forget to scroll through the storify to catch my story of dealing with shade in the gym!

I am by no means a “beast” or “alpha” but I no longer fear the weight room/area. I used to be intimidated by what I have lovingly named “Gorrillas” *sarcasm here* you know those big burly dudes grunting and tossing sweat and heavy weights with the ugliest faces they can muster. But with education and a general “f*ck it” attitude I learn they aren’t as knowledgable as they seem to be. Their form is terrible and they rest forever and focus only on their upper body leaving they chicken legs to tremble under their massive upper bodies. So the fact that I took the time to learn proper form and received a compliment on my form from one of the few guys that seems like he knows what he’s doing and a pretty cut lady gave me confidence to strut in do my routine and leave feeling like the ish.
Ugh, you have them in your gym too? I’m waiting for some of the guys in my gym to end up with back injuries, they way they try to throw weights around to “prove” how strong they are.
