Weekend WTF: Dig In! They’re “All Natural!”

The one place I never expected to find a "This is healthy! Dig in!" claim... ...
by Erika Nicole Kendall

Coming off the heels of my “health halo” post, was this gorgeous display found in the “Nature’s Market” section of my local grocery store.

In case you missed it, “The “halo effect” is where we assume that just because a product comes with a certain phrase on the label – or comes from a certain store – that it’s going to further our goals.” It’s when something gets a pass for being “healthy” even though it’s.. um.. not.

Today’s “Weekend WTF?!” serves as a perfect example of “health halos” gone awry.

Yep. All natural. That means it’s ok to dig in without restraint.

I hope you’re staring at the screen as hard as I am.

Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever seen a “healthy!!!!111!!!!” sticker?

Oh, and don’t forget to send in your Weekend WTF?! submissions to wtf@blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com!

I’m so glad I’m not as gullible as the producers of such labels think.

I remember my first and last bag of “Olean” potato chips… Got gas and greasy crotch spots from that “natural” mineral oil by-product. My nanna used to give us “Vicks tea” when we got sick to “rush the cold out of us”. 1-2 later days the cold had fled our bodies and we were back in school. Didn’t even get that from “Olean”…

Or “sugar free” Twizzlers. Sweetened with Maltitol syrup… aka sweet laxative.

Oh! My mother buys those Baked! Natural products and they don’t taste as good as the original fried ones. So why bother? I mean, if you’re going to have junk food, then just eat the regular unhealthy junk food.

This is as bad as the “multi-grain” pringles!! It’s still pringles chips in a can!! http://www.pringles.com/en_US/Pages/Multigrain.aspx?Flavor=19 If you notice on the label, all the “Multi-grain” products fall under the less than two percent part of the label…

I found myself reaching for the multi-grain Pringles thinking I could eat just 1 more chip from this can lol but always knew there wasnt much difference.

Does that mean my homemade vegan pineapple cake shouldn’t be ate in two settings? I mean it is homemade and vegan and has pineapples!!
Seriously though, I think there are some mayonnaise brands billing themselves as healthy. Also, Taco Bell. I mean…come on now.
