			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>That&#8217;s right. Beginning April 25th and ending May 2nd, we will begin the 7 Day Clean Eating Challenge. But before I dive into the details, let&#8217;s talk a little bit about what clean eating is and how it benefits us.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/clean-eating.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1013" title="clean-eating" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/clean-eating-1024x680.jpg" alt="" width="500" /></a></p>
<h3>What is Clean Eating?</h3>
<p>Clean eating is eating as close to the source as possible. What is the source, you ask? The source is Mother Earth, of course. Sure, it sounds like hippie stuff, but think about it &#8211; look in your pantry or cabinets, then look in your refridgerator. If the vast majority of the foods you own reside outside of your refridgerator, and you consider yourself overweight? Chances are, that pantry or those cabinets are why.</p>
<p>Basically, living a life of clean eating is living a life of simplicity. You&#8217;re probably not going to overindulge on the breads &#8211; or eat much bread at all -while eating clean. No <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/whats-wrong-with-white-rice/">refined white rice</a>. No deep fried goods. No <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tag/processed-foods/">processed foods</a>. I mean, don&#8217;t get me wrong &#8212; I can acknowledge and appreciate the fact that our little friends in the box or plastic wrapper have allowed us to do a lot in a short amount of time (I can get scalloped potatoes with only a little milk and a microwave? I&#8217;m in there like swimwear!), but it is certainly not clean eating. If you&#8217;re going to embrace the challenge then the boxed goods, canned goods and plastic shrink wrapped packages&#8230; have got to go.</p>
<p>Clean eating, with all the &#8220;Mother Earth&#8221; talk, might sound like hippie speak (I am a self-proclaimed hippie and all), but it isn&#8217;t. It&#8217;s making sure that we use and respect the Earth for what it is supposed to give to us while, in turn, giving it what it needs. I don&#8217;t have to tell anyone that after we&#8217;ve enjoyed our boxed and plastic-wrapped goods, that that trash has to go somewhere&#8230;and it&#8217;s usually buried in a forest&#8230;er&#8230;landfill somewhere. Clean eating, because you&#8217;re using items that rarely come with wrappers, are less harmful to the environment.</p>
<p>Okay, no more hippie moments. For now.</p>
<h3>What are the basic tenets of clean eating?</h3>
<p><em><strong>Avoid <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/food-101-the-processed-foods-problem/">processed foods</a>.</strong></em> Outside of my usual spiel about why you should <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/made-with-real-blueberries-but-i-thought/">avoid foods laden with chemicals we don&#8217;t understand</a>, there is actually a multi-layer reason for why this is important.</p>
<p>For starters, <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/food-101-the-processed-foods-problem/">processed foods</a> usually come with an <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tag/high-fructose-corn-syrup/">excessive amount of sugar</a>. I mean, let&#8217;s face it &#8211; sugar tastes good. The companies who make our favorite foods know that sugar makes their food so irresistible, so they&#8217;re good for putting it in, well, everything. Avoiding unnecessary and unnatural sugars is a key part of clean eating, and you can&#8217;t do that in a lifestyle that includes processed foods.</p>
<p>Should you insist on indulging in foods that come wrapped in a package, check the ingredient label &#8211; if it contains an ingredient that you wouldn&#8217;t keep in your own kitchen (monosodium glutamate? what? &#8211; <em>(changed for clarity</em>)) then try to find something a little more chemical-free, or pass on the item altogether.</p>
<p>If you avoid processed foods, you&#8217;ll also be avoiding unnatural fats (like trans fats) and unnecessary carbs. All carbs aren&#8217;t bad, but the processed foods that tend to contain the highest amount of carbs and fats usually have the least nutritional value&#8230; and that gets in your way when it comes to achieving the next target of clean eating.</p>
<p><strong><em>Get the most out of your food choices.</em></strong> Usually, this means going for the fruits and veggies over the chips and dip. And remember, we&#8217;re eating as close to the source as possible&#8230; so get the regular peach and skip the fruit cups.</p>
<p>When you choose to eat something, aside from &#8220;make sure it tastes great&#8221; and &#8220;make sure there&#8217;s no [insert food allergy] in it,&#8221; add &#8220;make sure that it&#8217;s chock full of vitamins and minerals&#8221; and &#8220;make sure this is the most nutrient-filled choice I can make&#8221; to your list. So no, the white bread isn&#8217;t going to give you as much as the whole grain bread might. And if you don&#8217;t know whether or not your favorite sub spot offers whole grain bread? Call ahead of time and ask.</p>
<p><em><strong>Practice <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/portion-distortion-stop-eating-out-of-the-bag/">portion control</a>.</strong></em> <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/portion-distortion-stop-eating-out-of-the-bag/">I&#8217;ve written on this before</a>, but this is one part nutrition, one part eco-friendly. There&#8217;s no reason to take more than you need. Your body will only suffer through trying to churn through all this extra food, and it&#8217;s excess and unnecessary calories to burn. And you all know I love <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics/">counting a calorie or two</a>&#8230;hundred.</p>
<p><em><strong>Drink at least 8 cups of water per day.</strong></em> That&#8217;s right.. I said 8. That should keep you sooo busy, that <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/how-many-calories-are-you-drinking/">you can&#8217;t drink your pepsis or your coca colas or your hawaiian punches or your capri suns</a>. Outside of the fact that water has the ability to help you feel full (more on that later this week) and flush your body of impurities, it has zero calories.</p>
<p>Say it with me. Zero. Calories.</p>
<p>Those are the basics, but we&#8217;ll be counting down to the start of the challenge by digging deeper into the principles of clean eating. This week will have one post each day about clean eating &#8211; everything from drinking (and enjoying) water to eco-friendly organic living to shopping lists to preparation for a healthy lifestyle (check out &#8220;<a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/fitting-clean-eating-into-a-busy-life/">Fitting Clean Eating Into A Busy Lifestyle</a>&#8220;)&#8230; and topping it all off with a Q&amp;A Wednesday centered all around the challenge (<a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/healthy-eating/qa-wednesday-clean-eating-style/">posted here</a>).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/cereal.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-610" title="cereal" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/cereal.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a>I&#8217;ve been wanting to write about this for a while, now, but you know how sometimes&#8230; you just don&#8217;t know where to begin? Something is so screwed up from all sides, that there&#8217;s no possible way to make sense of it from it&#8217;s head or it&#8217;s heels?</p>
<p>Yeah, that&#8217;s kind of this processed food thing. And I know, in advance, that this is long. Frustratingly long, even. I&#8217;m breaking it up into bits, though, so don&#8217;t worry if you can&#8217;t take it all in at once.</p>
<p>What are processed foods? Allow me to shed some light.</p>
<p>A &#8220;processed food,&#8221; in general, is something that has had to endure a process to make it what it is before it is turned over to you. Almost everything that comes in a box&#8230; is processed. Almost everything that comes in a zip-sealed bag&#8230; is processed. Almost everything that comes from a big giant brand or huge corporation or massive factory plant somewhere&#8230; is processed. Almost everything that you purchase from a grocery store&#8230; is processed.</p>
<p>I mean, that includes a lot &#8211; that&#8217;s all the aisles in the grocery store! You&#8217;d have to scale the perimeter of the store to avoid that, right?</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at the history of food in this country over the past one hundred or so years.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/mech1929.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-611" title="mech1929" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/mech1929-300x176.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="176" /></a>Once upon a time, before food was big industry (meaning: before processed foods) and we were dealing with the fear of famine, people were much smaller. Being overweight was a rich person&#8217;s dilemma. Why? Because you have to ingest an AWFUL LOT of whole foods (as in, not processed) on a regular basis to develop and maintain an overweight physique in that day. So being overweight simply didn&#8217;t make financial sense. Things like bread, pies, cookies, cakes&#8230; they were rare &#8211; couldn&#8217;t always buy them at the store, so you had to make them at home. Highly unlikely that you could or would be able to bake sweets every single day for your pleasure.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/rationing.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-613" title="rationing" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/rationing-238x300.jpg" alt="" width="238" height="300" /></a>Because they were concerned about famine, portions were rationed carefully. They didn&#8217;t want to be caught out there not being about to get food, and having little at the house. Sometimes, you&#8217;ll hear our elders talk about when whole grains were once rationed out to the masses because not only did they need to make sure they had it for the soldiers, they needed to make sure the supply could cover everyone in the event of emergency.</p>
<p>To sum it up, food wasn&#8217;t presumed to be plentiful, and it caused people to skimp, penny pinch, and exercise portion control.</p>
<p>Now, in comes the push toward larger food distributors &#8211; less focus on local, more focus on &#8220;getting big.&#8221; &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Butz">Get big or get out</a>,&#8221; I believe was the actual line. The US Gov&#8217;t honestly feared that they wouldn&#8217;t be able to feed everyone without food production going factory, and took every effort they could to try to get it there. With food production being taken to the factories, we were separated more from how our food was made. The further the process was taken from us, the less oversight we had in regards to what was in it. We used to have the milkman, right? You made arrangements with a local farm to have your milk delivered to your door, right? Now, if you drink milk, you&#8217;re buying a gallon that comes from a farm that you have no knowledge of. You&#8217;re buying from a brand.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a small business owner, so while I could interject right here about <a title="BGG2WL in NYC: Livin’ La Vida Locavore In Union Square" href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/bgg2wl-in-nyc-livin-la-vida-locavore-in-union-square/">what it does to our local communities to not be able to buy our food locally and keep our money in our communities</a>&#8230; I won&#8217;t. Just know that I could.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/foodman.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-614" title="foodman" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/foodman-300x203.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="203" /></a>As I said, the larger food manufacturing grew, the more we were distanced from it&#8217;s production, and the less oversight we were granted to it&#8217;s creation and ingredients. Because (in my opinion) the government wanted to simply do what it could to ensure that the US had a consistent food supply, lots of leeway was given to big food factories to help ease them along their way in supplying our supermarkets with food &#8211; glorious food! Want an example? The food industry was able to get the FDA to change the law &#8211; imitation foods that weren&#8217;t nutritionally deficient in comparison to their whole counterparts didn&#8217;t have to be clearly marked as &#8220;imitation.&#8221; (You can skip the below quote if you like because I&#8217;ve quoted it before, but it&#8217;s valuable enough to read twice.)</p>
<blockquote><p>The 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act imposed strict rules requiring that the word “imitation” appear on any food product that was, well, an imitation &#8230; [And] the food industry [argued over the word], strenuously for decades, and in 1973 it finally succeeded in getting the imitation rule tossed out, a little-notice but momentous step that helped speed America down the path of nutritionism.</p>
<p>… The American Heart Association, eager to get Americans off saturated fats and onto vegetable oils (including hydrogenated vegetable oils), was actively encouraging the food industry to “modify” various foods to get the saturated fats and cholesterol out of them, and in the early seventies the association urged that “any existing and regulatory barriers to the marketing of such foods be removed.”</p>
<p>And so they were when, in 1973, the FDA (not, note, the Congress that wrote the law) simply repealed the 1938 rule concerning imitation foods. &#8230; <strong>The revised imitation rule held that as long as an imitation product was not “nutritionally inferior” to the natural food it sought to impersonate—as long as it had the same quantities of recongized nutrients—the imitation could be marketed without using the dreaded “i” word. </strong>— <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594201455?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=ablgisgutowel-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1594201455">In Defense of Food: An Eater&#8217;s Manifesto</a><img style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=ablgisgutowel-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1594201455" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" /></p></blockquote>
<p>Families who survived the rationing and the famine were happy about this! No more struggling, breaking their backs to stretch food. They could eat like the rich folks! They could also gain weight like &#8216;em, too. Alas, the way men and women were employed in this era, they weren&#8217;t granted the same amount of time for leisurely activity like the rich. In other words, we were eating &#8220;like the rich,&#8221; but not burning the weight off like &#8216;em. This part of the story, can be evidenced by Katharine Flegel&#8217;s study of weight gain from the sixties to the present. This <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/books/2009/07/20/090720crbo_books_kolbert?printable=true">New Yorker article</a> summarizes it briefly:</p>
<blockquote><p>In the early nineteen-nineties, a researcher at the C.D.C. named Katherine Flegal was reviewing the results of the survey then under way when she came across figures that seemed incredible. According to the first National Health study, which was done <strong>in the early nineteen-sixties, 24.3 per cent of American adults were overweight</strong>—roughly defined as having a body-mass index greater than twenty-seven. (The metrics are slightly different for men and women; by the study’s definition, a woman who is five feet tall would count as overweight if she was more than a hundred and forty pounds, and a man who is six feet tall if he weighed more than two hundred and four pounds.) By the time of the second survey, conducted <strong>in the early nineteen-seventies, the proportion of overweight adults had increased by three-quarters of a per cent, to twenty-five per cent, and, by the third survey, in the late seventies, it had edged up to 25.4 per cent</strong>. The results that Flegal found so surprising came from the fourth survey. <strong>During the nineteen-eighties, the American gut, instead of expanding very gradually, had ballooned: 33.3 per cent of adults now qualified as overweight.</strong> Flegal began asking around at professional meetings. Had other researchers noticed a change in Americans’ waistlines? They had not. This left her feeling even more perplexed. She knew that errors could have sneaked into the data in a variety of ways, so she and her colleagues checked and rechecked the figures. There was no problem that they could identify. Finally, in 1994, they published their findings in the <em>Journal of the American Medical Association</em>. <strong>In just ten years, they showed, Americans had collectively gained more than a billion pounds. “If this was about tuberculosis, it would be called an epidemic,” another researcher wrote in an editorial accompanying the report.</strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Food was becoming way more accessible to us. I do want to go back to the point about the FDA&#8217;s law about imitation substances, though. It does a lot more to the food industry than you think it does. Take a loaf of bread, for example. Bread has maybe five ingredients in it &#8211; flour, water, sugar, salt, and yeast &#8211; but if you look on the label for the bread in your house right now? You see what &#8211; hyphenated chemicals. The food industry now has the ability to put anything in your food, so long as it is not deficient in the nutrients that science recognizes are valuable&#8230; in comparison to the food it imitates.  Remember this part. No, really &#8211; remember this part.</p>
<h3>So, if the foods aren&#8217;t nutritionally deficient, why is this a problem?</h3>
<p>Well, how much credit do you give food science? The rule is simply that the foods cannot be deficient in nutrients <strong>that science recognizes as valuable</strong>. What about what science hasn&#8217;t spotted yet? What about all these hyphenated chemicals that science hasn&#8217;t identified (or is prevented from identifying) as harmful to our health?</p>
<p>And before you call me a conspiracy theorist, consider this: it took science <em>decades</em> to recognize that trans-fats &#8211; once a massive part of margarine and other major foods &#8211; were hazardous to our health. Believe it or not, the government still allows trans-fats in foods, <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/supermarket-swindle-two-things-to-avoid-on-your-food-labels/">and actually allows food manufacturers to lie about how much trans-fats are in their foods</a>. <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">(More on that later.)</span></p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/chemistry.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-616" title="chemistry" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/chemistry-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>What else, in these foods, is doing us in? Science doesn&#8217;t know yet. And really, since most of our food science studies are funded by the very industry they affect&#8230; do you genuinely expect science to find out? I&#8217;m not telling you that they&#8217;d intentionally fudge numbers to present favorable results &#8211; trying to remain unbiased, here &#8211; but I <em>am</em> telling you it&#8217;s easy to divert funds elsewhere&#8230; as in, another study. Maybe even&#8230; <a href="http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/news/20100104/experts-no-proof-autism-diets-help-dont-help?src=RSS_PUBLIC">a study attempting to debunk something claiming their products are harmful</a>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not the conspiracy theorist in me. That&#8217;s just smart business on their part&#8230; regardless of what it does to the consumer. Keep the consumer far enough away from the research, and they&#8217;ll never know the downfall of buying my product. It just happens that way.</p>
<p>So since this is all cyclical, let&#8217;s go back to that availability of food thing. Now, all this food (food, mind you, that seeks to NOT be nutritionally deficient although it admits that it is) is available to our families. We, knowing what it&#8217;s like to have to worry about food not being available, begin to indulge. Factories &#8211; and factory jobs &#8211; are springing up because industries are blossoming. Longer work hours, both adults in the household are now working, and all this super convenient food at hand. We&#8217;re eating what we can, when we can, and eating a lot of it&#8230; since we&#8217;re enjoying the ability to eat at our discretion, not at the discretion of a ration.</p>
<p>Keep in mind, also, at this time&#8230; a new generation of children are being born under this new understanding of food. Family tradition might lend to certain dishes being made a certain way, but lots of dishes are being replaced by the magic elixir in the box. Some of us have that Grandma who insists on cooking everything from scratch. We tend to write her off as crazy or paranoid because &#8220;Times have changed&#8221; and &#8220;No one has time for all that cooking,&#8221; or maybe because &#8220;This is the [insert decade]s, Nana, we don&#8217;t live in the kitchen the way you used to!&#8221; Things that are all true, but come with consequences.</p>
<p>I asked you, dear reader, to keep in mind the point I made earlier about hyphenated chemical ingredients in our food, right? I hope you did. The interesting loophole in the FDA&#8217;s policy about imitation foods is that there&#8217;s very little limit to what can now be put INTO food. That&#8217;s an important point.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/picnic.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-617" title="picnic" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/picnic-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" /></a>You know how, if you leave food sitting out, it will attract flies? Why? Because flies and rodents are attracted to the same things that our bodies are attracted to in food &#8211; nutrients. Ever notice that with ALL the food in a supermarket, there&#8217;s rarely any ants or bugs in the aisles, but you have to swat them away from the tomatoes or kiwi in the produce area? That&#8217;s not because every area in the grocery store &#8211; except the produce &#8211; is sprayed down. I can only offer theory as to why that is. For starters, the processed foods have to be <em>processed</em> to maintain shelf life. They have to be able to handle being transported to the facility. They have to be able to withstand sitting on a shelf until purchased. They have to be able to withstand sitting in your cabinets until you cook them.</p>
<p>Can you do that with your home made cooking? I doubt it.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another question: What do you think they&#8217;re putting in these processed foods to ward off insects and rodents?</p>
<p>Last question: Do you think it&#8217;s a good idea to ingest the same chemicals that are put in food&#8230; food that flies don&#8217;t even want? The same chemicals that prevent flies from desiring our food, are the same chemicals we&#8217;re ingesting when we eat this stuff anyway. How healthy can that be? Nothing in the world can debunk what feels like logic to me.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/foodaw.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-615" title="foodaw" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/foodaw-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" /></a>Taking that one step further for those of us who DO indulge anyway, what about the fact that the average processed food contains more calories than it&#8217;s &#8220;real&#8221; counterpart? Remember <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/recipes/make-it-at-home-sexy-ranch-dressing">my ranch dressing recipe</a> that I shared? <em>My</em> recipe was 300 calories a cup. Kraft&#8217;s ranch dressing was <em>easily</em> 1400 calories. Let me tell you a secret I learned from working in restaurants. Foods that have to be reheated to be cooked are pumped with extra fat, because it helps maintain the flavor through the reheating process. Chemicals &#8211; like monosodium glutamate, found in processed foods with rich, thick, almost meaty tastes &#8211; help reheatables that have to be pumped with extra fat taste more pleasing to you. The convenience that the food offers may be a welcome benefit, but it comes at the cost of a massive excess in calories and unnecessary additives and preservatives.</p>
<p>So here we are, living in the new millennium. For breakfast, we&#8217;re eating cereal. For lunch, we give our kids lunchables. For dinner, we heat up a pot pie. (If you want a laugh, look at the ingredients list on the back of any of those.) For a drink, we have a capri sun or a coke. Instead of nutrient-filled calorie-light whole foods, we&#8217;re now indulging in calorie-heavy nutrient-light foods that&#8217;ve been mainly cooked FOR us. When we take in foods, our bodies are expecting a certain amount of nutrients and vitamins. If our body doesn&#8217;t get what it&#8217;s looking for fast enough, what happens? It compels you to eat more! Yes! Have you ever inhaled half a bag of wafers, only to be hungry again moments later? All that work your body put in to digest this vitamin-free food, only to find that there are no vitamins in it? Yes, it&#8217;s going to tell you to try again and eat something else.</p>
<p>The problem for many of us, is that because it&#8217;s so much easier and quicker to grab another processed food item instead of cooking.. we try to fix the problem with something that&#8217;d only make it worse. All the while scarfing down the calories, forgetting all the nutrients, and packing on the pounds while we&#8217;re at it. The convenience, the fact that very few of us know how some foods are cooked, let alone what the foods SHOULD consist of, has allowed us to eat much more with much less effort. Is that a bad thing? If you know how to moderate yourself, of course not. Many of us, apparently, don&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Having said all that (2600 words, and STILL not a record for me), I have to say this. I know we all lead busy lives. If you managed to read all of this in one sitting, I give you kudos &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t even write it all in one sitting. We have to scale back in a major way if we want to be healthy. In writing this, I&#8217;ve decided to break this up into a series, continuing it on with how I managed to wean my family off of processed foods and what it&#8217;s taught me about how my body interacts with food, and how it <em>wants</em> to interact with food. Big difference between the two.</p>

(I&#8217;m Midwestern-raised. It&#8217;s pop, dang it.)</p>
<p>I can remember the days when I used to drink a two-liter a day, though. I mean, it was so cheap and easy. Whenever I was thirsty, I&#8217;d just go ahead and grab another giant glass of pop. I still have the glass I used to use to drink my pop &#8211; a big white thermal 20oz cup.</p>
<p>I think about the calories I wasted drinking soda, and I cringe.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s start off with a little basic math. One serving of pop is 8oz, or 1 cup. If there are 8oz in a measured cup, then 20 oz is the equivalent of two and a half cups of soda in one sitting. If each 1 cup serving of pop is 97 calories, then two and a half cups of pop is 242 calories. If I did that three times a day, that&#8217;s 728 calories alone that I&#8217;m <em>drinking. Each day.</em></p>
<p>728 calories a day in soft drinks multiplied by 365 days a year that I was drinking it gives me a total of 265,720 calories. Divide that by 3500 (the number of calories in a pound), and that&#8217;s 75lbs in a year that I contended with&#8230; all over a salty sugary drink.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at the nutritional value of the soft drink.</p>
<p>There is none.</p>
<p>No, really. <em>Carbonated water. <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tag/high-fructose-corn-syrup/">High fructose corn syrup</a>. Caramel color. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphoric_acid">Phosphoric acid</a>. &#8220;Natural flavors.&#8221; Caffeine. </em></p>
<p>Not nary an item in that list offers any nutritional value. Sure, there&#8217;s &#8220;corn&#8221; in there, but it&#8217;s been so thoroughly processed that the only thing remaining from the corn itself it its sweetness&#8230; and trust me, there&#8217;s a ton of it in there.</p>
<p>Check out that phosphoric acid, though. This is the same stuff that&#8217;s an ingredient in your rust removal products. Yes, it&#8217;ll clean your hammer, your nails and any other rusty tools. It also gives your favorite soft drink its tangy bite, so drink up.</p>
<p>Do you know how much sugar (read: high fructose corn syrup, because that <em>is</em> the source of sugar in a soft drink, nowadays) is in a soft drink? Approximately 30g <em>per serving.</em> So, since we&#8217;re multiplying everything by 2.5 (since, if you drink a big bottle of coke a day, you&#8217;re drinking 20oz which is 2.5 servings), you&#8217;re getting 75 grams of sugar in each bottle.</p>
<p>Look at it like this: since each teaspoon of sugar is 4.2 grams, you&#8217;re getting a little under 18 teaspoons of sugar in each bottle. I was doing this three times a day. If my math is correct, that&#8217;s a little more than one cup worth of sugar each day. Yummy.</p>
<p>What do we know about sugar? Well, let&#8217;s address the digestive aspects, first:</p>
<blockquote><p>Sugars are digested in one step. An enzyme in the lining of the small intestine digests sucrose, also known as table sugar, into glucose and fructose, which are absorbed through the intestine into the blood. &#8211; <em>[source: <a href="http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/">NIDDK</a>]</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Taken from <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/what-are-you-eating/high-fructose-corn-syrup-whats-the-big-deal/">my own high fructose corn syrup rant, comparing table sugar to high fructose corn syrup</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>You and I BOTH know that it doesn’t require an MD to be able to study and understand a pros and cons list. If I show you a list that says “fattening,” and another list that says “leaves you prone to diabetes, inflates your appetite, and apparently <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/10/091029211521.htm">can be linked to high blood pressure</a>,” you’re going to be able to easily identify which one is going to leave you worse off, right?</p>
<p>Do you <em>need </em>to explain to someone that High Fructose Corn Syrup fiddles with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptin">leptin</a>, a hormone in the human body that aids in regulating the appetite, in a way that prevents you from being able to control your hunger? Do you <em>need</em> to be able to explain to someone that <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090303123802.htm">HFCS screws with your body’s ability to process insulin</a>? (Just in case you’re wondering, that works like this: since <a href="http://www.fourwinds10.com/siterun_data/health/food/news.php?q=1237995913">HFCS is metabolized as fat quicker than regular sugar</a> once it hits your liver, this process triggers something called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This process leads to insulin resistance and type II diabetes.) It isn’t enough that you know something makes you uncomfortable and you don’t want to partake in it. You have to be a <em>doctor</em> now to speak ill of it?</p></blockquote>
<p>Because the excessive amount of sugar in a single 20oz bottle of soda is converted directly into fat into the system, and because the forceful impact of sugar to your system affects your body&#8217;s ability to properly gauge its hunger levels (as evidenced above), soft drinks <strong>directly</strong> contribute to your risk of becoming overweight.</p>
<p>And as I&#8217;ve written before, Princeton said:</p>
<blockquote><p>Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.</p>
<p>In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides.</p>
<p>[...]</p>
<p>“When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they’re becoming obese — every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don’t see this; they don’t all gain extra weight.” – [<a href="http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S26/91/22K07/">source</a>]</p></blockquote>
<p>As any clean eater knows, soft drinks break two cardinal rules of clean eating: no highly processed foods, and always get the most out of your food choices. Take advantage of the nutritional values of the foods you love and if something you love offers you nothing in return naturally, then it&#8217;s time to let it go.</p>
<p>A drink with absolutely no nutritional value, that can clean the rust off your shower head,  that aids your body in losing the ability to control its appetite, that aids your body in losing its sensitivity to sugar and developing insulin resistance&#8230;?</p>
<p>Just drink some water, already. Jeez. (Oh, and you diet drinkers? I&#8217;ve got somethin&#8217; for y&#8217;all, too.)</p>

<p>I&#8217;m not gonna lie &#8211; this is more for me than it is for you, dear reader, because I have a bad habit of running back to foods that are laden with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and usually don&#8217;t realize what I&#8217;m doing to myself until I&#8217;m halfway through the package. As if my mind says &#8220;Nooooo! Don&#8217;t look at the ingredients li&#8211; aww, damn.&#8221;</p>
<p>Conventional wisdom (and your brain) tells you, &#8220;if it feels good, do it.&#8221; Well, you know how sometimes, things feel a little <em>too </em>good? Like, so good, it&#8217;s downright sinful? Rest assured, you probably have no business doing it. My favorite piece of cheesecake? Sinful. My favorite Tira Mi Su? Sinful. The BBQ sauce I just tossed out the other day because I was clenching the bottle trying to understand why common sense wouldn&#8217;t let me put it down? Sinful! (By the way, all three of them contain HFCS.)</p>
<p>Having said all that, let me introduce you to <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/06/AR2008030603294.html">HFCS</a>. Actually, I&#8217;ll let the Corn Refiners Association do it:</p>

<p>Now&#8230; I laugh, only because I work in marketing. Ads like this serve one purpose: damage control. So when I see something like this, my first thought is &#8220;what happened to make the corn farmers toss money at the small screen?&#8221; They&#8217;re essentially mocking the very people they&#8217;re targeting — those who know it&#8217;s bad for them, but aren&#8217;t able to quickly express why — and still expecting to win them over. Or&#8230; is this a stealthy method of giving &#8220;comebacks&#8221; to HFCS fans to use when those <em>hoity toity picky eaters</em> get on their soapbox about Cheetos and Capri Suns? Who goes to those kinds of lengths when everything is ok? &#8230;when the accusations are baseless?</p>
<p>So&#8230; digging, I go.</p>
<p>First, let&#8217;s look at that ad up there. &#8220;My hair dresser says that sugar is healthier than high fructose corn syrup.&#8221; Follow that up with the witty retort of, &#8220;Wow! You get your hair done by a doctor?&#8221; [<em>insert laughter</em>]</p>
<p>You and I BOTH know that it doesn&#8217;t require an MD to be able to study and understand a pros and cons list. If I show you a list that says &#8220;fattening,&#8221; and another list that says &#8220;leaves you prone to diabetes, inflates your appetite, and apparently <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/10/091029211521.htm">can be linked to high blood pressure</a>,&#8221; you&#8217;re going to be able to easily identify which one is going to leave you worse off, right?</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/corn.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-347" title="corn" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/corn-300x200.jpg" alt="corn" width="300" height="200" /></a>Do you <em>need </em>to explain to someone that High Fructose Corn Syrup fiddles with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptin">leptin</a>, a hormone in the human body that aids in regulating the appetite, in a way that prevents you from being able to control your hunger? Do you <em>need</em> to be able to explain to someone that <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090303123802.htm">HFCS screws with your body&#8217;s ability to process insulin</a>? (Just in case you&#8217;re wondering, that works like this: since <a href="http://www.fourwinds10.com/siterun_data/health/food/news.php?q=1237995913">HFCS is metabolized as fat quicker than regular sugar</a> once it hits your liver, this process triggers something called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This process leads to insulin resistance and type II diabetes.) It isn&#8217;t enough that you know something makes you uncomfortable and you don&#8217;t want to partake in it. You have to be a <em>doctor</em> now to speak ill of it?</p>
<p>Well, let me tell y&#8217;all somethin&#8217; &#8211; I&#8217;m no doctor, and I&#8217;ll still be damned if someone tells me that my own bad feelings aren&#8217;t enough to justify not wanting <a href="http://www.westonaprice.org/motherlinda/cornsyrup.html">a chemistry experiment</a> nourishing my body I was given. Period. You might get the mental judo chop for that one.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s also talk about this moderation thing, here. Of course, HFCS is safe in moderation. At the same time, so are Doritos. The difference between the two is, well&#8230; do you <em><strong>know </strong></em>how many foods you eat each day contain HFCS? Let me put it to you like this: Soda? High Fructose Corn Syrup. &#8220;Processed Cheese Food?&#8221; HFCS. <a href="http://www.accidentalhedonist.com/index.php/2005/06/09/foods_and_products_containing_high_fruct">Jam, jelly, ketchup, BBQ sauce <img src='http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> , &#8220;fruit juices,&#8221; Wonder bread (most breads, actually), eggos, pop tarts, <em>cough syrup,</em> and mayo?</a> High Fructose Corn Syrup.Yes. Apparently, you have a better chance of escaping Doritos than you do HFCS.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mcds.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-346" title="mcds" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/mcds-300x225.jpg" alt="mcds" width="300" height="225" /></a>I think I&#8217;ve named at least ONE thing that we all eat throughout the day. If not, then think about this: I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve had a McDonalds menu meal, right? The same corn that makes your HFCS feeds the cows that turn into your burgers, <a href="http://www.fastfoodingredients.com/2007/11/03/mcdonalds-french-fries/">becomes the oil that cooks the fries</a> and the <a href="http://www.fastfoodingredients.com/2007/11/17/mcdonalds-vanilla-triple-thick%c2%ae-shake/">syrup that sweetens the shakes and the sodas</a>, and makes up <a href="http://www.fastfoodingredients.com/2007/11/03/mcdonalds-chicken-mcnuggets/">13 of the 38 ingredients in the Chicken McNuggets</a>.  Now, think about &#8220;moderation.&#8221; How can you effectively moderate something that is <em>everywhere</em> and <em>in everything</em>? You can&#8217;t&#8230; and they know it. Your ability to gauge what &#8220;moderate use&#8221; is becomes swayed by the fact that it&#8217;s been in everything you ate that day. For those of you who use these foods regular and often, &#8220;HFCS in moderation&#8221; is pretty much&#8230; a joke.</p>
<p>Why is that, though? Why is it that you can&#8217;t escape this substance? In as few words as possible, here&#8217;s why.</p>
<p>Once upon a time, our government approved a plan that pretty much pays farmers to overproduce corn in America. Considering the basic principle of supply and demand (the more rare, the more expensive; the more common, the more cheap), that drives the price of corn down. Since they have this item in such abundance and so cheap, they come up with multiple ways to use it&#8230; hence HFCS. You, a food exec, have an extremely cheap item in your hands that makes food taste (or, at least appear to taste) better. Why not use this to your advantage? Stick some extra fat in certain foods to stretch out our supply&#8230; and when the taste is altered? Stick a little HFCS in there. Want to create a cheap juice? Find a &#8220;strawberry&#8221; flavor, some high fructose corn syrup, and water. Pow. Cost $0.50 to make, but watch me sell a giant jug of it for $2.50. I&#8217;m in there like swimwear. It&#8217;s just smart, business-wise.</p>
<p>Nutrition-wise, it&#8217;s doing nothing for you, the consumer. It&#8217;s empty calories. That means for all that you&#8217;re ingesting, there is no vitamin or nutritional value for any of it. At all. You should seek for all of your food to provide you a liiiiiiittle somethin&#8217; in the end. Besides a gut, that is.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s one more point I want to bring up before I wrap this up&#8230; and that&#8217;s the point about rewards, gratification, and habit. HFCS tends to trigger a sort of&#8230; Pavlov&#8217;s dog syndrome, if you will.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/pup.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-348" title="pup" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/pup-300x225.jpg" alt="pup" width="300" height="225" /></a>To summarize briefly, a Russian scientist named Ivan Pavlov studied <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_conditioning#Pavlov.27s_experiment">conditioned responses</a> in dogs. In short, if you get in the habit of doing something and the SAME reward happens each time you do it, you begin to expect (or, in other words, you become conditioned) the reward before you&#8217;ve even done the action that brings the reward. In other words, if you know you love that BBQ sauce&#8230; if you see it, your body starts to experience the pleasure you get from it long before you taste it.. thus causing you to indulge. You want that good feeling again. It&#8217;s that simple.</p>
<p>Feels like I&#8217;m sticking you with a burden, right? That&#8217;s not my intention. I would love it if you could resolve a few things within yourself.</p>
<p>First, resolve that you&#8217;ll begin to phase out some of the unnecessary HFCS-filled foods in your life. If you overdo the mountain dew, consider packing it away&#8230; for good. If you love the ketchup or pancake syrups, look for something a little more natural. If you can&#8217;t afford the healthier option, shoot for a less expensive option. (In the case of the syrups, the healthier alternate that my grocery had cost an extra $4. So instead, I top my pancakes and french toast with a little confectioners sugar, $0.99, and fruit slices, $1.29. In the case of the ketchup, I simply stopped eating hot dogs&#8230; the one thing I couldn&#8217;t eat without ketchup.)</p>
<p>Then resolve that you&#8217;ve made the best decision for you, and no corny commercial or insulting advertisement will make you feel less comfortable with the decision you&#8217;ve made for yourself. Just like you don&#8217;t owe anyone any expanation for why you want to lose weight and eat healthier, you for damn sure don&#8217;t owe anyone any explanations for why you choose to phase High Fructose Corn Syrup out of your diet.</p>
<p>Lastly, like I&#8217;ve written before, resolve that this is a difficult lifestyle change — a lifetime lifestyle change and <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/its-all-mental/one-foot-in-front-of-the-other-mentally-preparing-for-weight-loss">it will be bumpy at first</a>. That&#8217;s perfectly okay. As long as you&#8217;re taking and following steps each day, you&#8217;ll be able to bet that you&#8217;re moving in the direction in which you need to go.</p>

I used to kill the bag. Destroy the box. I could barely sit down before I tore into it&#8230; whatever the &#8220;it&#8221; was for the day.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m talkin&#8217; about snackin&#8217;. Although, for me, it was never really a snack. Not in the traditional sense &#8211; it wasn&#8217;t simply a little bit to hold me over. It was a LOT to hold me over unnecessarily&#8230; and on a regular basis.</p>
<p>I remember one day, coming home from the grocery and getting ready to start putting everything away&#8230; and the first bag I opened had a bag of Verona cookies inside. Guilty pleasure, yes they were. It felt like for every item I put in the fridge, I was tossing a cookie in my mouth. I don&#8217;t even know if I consciously realized what I was doing at that time.. but I was just eatin&#8217; for the sake of eatin&#8217;.</p>
<p>Now&#8230; it&#8217;s all funny and jokes until I think about the fact that by the time I had finished putting the groceries away, I had finished the entire bag of cookies. There&#8217;s what &#8211; 24 cookies in a bag, right? If one serving size of 3 cookies is 140 calories&#8230; 24 divided by 3 equals 8 servings in a bag&#8230; so if I ate 140 calories 8 times&#8230; that&#8217;s over a thousand calories in one fell swoop.</p>
<p>I realized this was a habit for me. If I ate some goldfish crackers, I&#8217;d just get them directly out of the box. Pour them from my hand directly into my mouth &#8211; that way I never had to face how much of them I was eating. Not like I didn&#8217;t care, but&#8230; <em>I didn&#8217;t care.</em></p>
<p>If I ate some ice cream? I&#8217;d get a spoonful from the pint, sometimes leave the spoon on top of the ice cream (nasty college student habit, I know), and go back to what I was doing. Cheez-its? Pfft, don&#8217;t even. My hand would go from box to mouth.</p>
<p>But then, I started reading the nutrition labels. I could never gauge &#8211; and if I did, I&#8217;d underestimate &#8211; just how much of something I was eating. It was getting in the way of my calorie counting. Of knowing what I was really putting in my body. So&#8230; I had to figure out a plan. A way to get a better grasp on how much food I was scarfing down mindlessly.</p>
<p>I bought myself a bag of blue corn chips. They taste a little heavier than your typical tortilla chips, but there&#8217;s this rich-and-almost-velvety taste to them that totally rocks. I turned the bag over, and took note of the serving size. 1 serving is equal to 15 chips. I then promptly grabbed a box of ziploc bags, and got to work.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/0908091708.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-756" title="0908091708" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/0908091708-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>
<p>Inside each bag&#8230; is 15 chips. One serving per ziploc. And wouldn&#8217;t you know it &#8211; I was eating three and four servings at a time just from mindless snacking? Do you see those portion sizes? Add in the typical guacamole or sour cream? Holy jeez&#8230; I was killin&#8217; myself.</p>
<p>How did the ziploc treatment work? Well, let me tell you. It worked. Believe it or not, there&#8217;s science behind why.</p>
<p>Consider <a href="http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/516022/?sc=lwhr">this study</a> done by researchers at Cornell University:</p>
<blockquote><p>According to a new Cornell University study, when moviegoers were served stale popcorn in big buckets, they ate 34 percent more than those given the same stale popcorn in medium-sized containers. Tasty food created even larger appetites: Fresh popcorn in large tubs resulted in people eating 45 percent more than those given fresh popcorn in medium-sized containers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re finding that portion size can influence intake as much as taste,&#8221; said Brian Wansink, the John S. Dyson Professor of Marketing and of Applied Economics at Cornell. <strong>&#8220;Large packages and containers can lead to overeating foods <span style="color: #800000;">we do not even find appealing</span>.&#8221;</strong> <a href="http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/516022/?sc=lwhr">[...]</a></p></blockquote>
<p>So&#8230; if all it takes to make you eat more of something you <em>don&#8217;t</em> like is a larger container..</p>
<p>&#8230;could you imagine what it does to you to eat something you like without even transferring it to a container at all? Eating your favorite chips out of the bag, instead of a bowl or a paper towel? Eating your favorite ice cream out of the pint container, instead of a champagne flute (hey, get creative &#8211; work with me, here)? Never getting a bowl, a plate &#8211; or in my case, a ziploc bag &#8211; allowed me to eat at will&#8230; never having to face how much I was eating, or exactly how often I was eating, either. Not like I ever had any dishes to clean, right?</p>
<p>Can everyone set aside time to get their ziploc on? Of course not. That&#8217;s not my suggestion at all. However, I <em>do</em> believe in baby steps. Take it slow. Start by no longer eating out of the box, bag, or container. Commit yourself to every time you get something to eat, you&#8217;ll put it in a bowl or plate before you put it in your mouth. Give yourself the opportunity to see what you&#8217;re eating, and if you know you shouldn&#8217;t be eating in the first place&#8230; feel a little guilt about it as you put it on your plate. &#8216;Cause yes &#8211; sometimes, you know you have no business eating seconds (or firsts, in some cases) and you should feel a little eater&#8217;s remorse about it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1129092029_0002.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-551" title="1129092029_0002" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1129092029_0002-204x300.jpg" alt="" width="204" height="300" /></a>I have fond memories of my pregnancy. I spent lots of nights snuggled up in my bed with my arms wrapped tightly around my tummy, because it felt like there were little arms wrapped around me on the inside. Probably wrapped around my bladder, which would explain that constant &#8220;Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now!&#8221; feeling I had.</p>
<p>I gained a LOT &#8211; A LOT &#8211; of weight during my pregnancy. Something like 80lbs, I believe. Mentally, I fudged the numbers because they&#8217;re kind of hard to swallow. I was already something like 240lbs&#8230; another 80lbs put me out of this world.</p>
<p>And yes, all of that belly birthed one 9lb, 1oz baby girl.</p>
<p>After giving birth, I had to get several exams and ultrasounds to see what was going on with my legs. I was experiencing a seriously insane amount of pain and numbness. What I was dealing with, really, was <a href="http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003103.htm">pitting edema</a>. Considering my other issues, they feared that I had developed diabetes.</p>
<p>Now that I&#8217;m in a better place mentally when it comes to understanding my health, I see all of the things that I did wrong. I see the things that I wish I had done, the tidbits of my doctor&#8217;s advice that I had taken seriously, and the opportunities I wish I had taken advantage of. So, allow me to offer some very important bits of information to my pregnant beauties out there that you should bring up with your doctors on your next visit. Confirm that these are good ideas for YOU, and do your best to stick to it &#8211; we want you around to see your baby&#8217;s babies!</p>
<ul>
<li>You are not eating for two. I&#8217;own care what Nana says. Nana might&#8217;ve been able to &#8220;be greedy&#8221; when she was pregnant back in the day, but I can assure you Nana&#8217;s food was way more filling, way higher quality, and much less processed. The prevailing sentiment right now is that a pregnant mommy only needs about 300 calories extra&#8230; so try not to go beyond that.</li>
<li>Try to avoid the magic elixir foods. If it involves a powder that turns into a liquid &#8211; you know what I mean&#8230; rice-a-roni, hamburger helper, drink mixes &#8211; it&#8217;s probably in your best interest to limit your intake of it. You want to get as many whole foods and nutrients from natural resources for you and your baby as often and as much as possible. You&#8217;re already tired, trust me &#8211; you want to make sure you&#8217;re getting nutrients that will keep you energetic &#8211; not make you more tired.</li>
<li>Having said that, the more vegetables and fruits and whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat breads, etc &#8211; consult your doctor in the event that you may have allergies to be concerned about) you eat, the better off &#8211; not to mention more full and healthy &#8211; you and baby will be. Processed foods have a tendency to contain HIGH levels of salt in them so while they may feel good to the Mommy with the salt cravings, you might not love how you feel post-pregnancy&#8230; or even later on IN your pregnancy.</li>
<li>Stay busy! Pick up several hobbies, and keep BUSY! You don&#8217;t want to feel compelled to eat simply out of boredom. Go take a stroll, go run some errands, anything that can keep your hands and mind busy.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.healthandyoga.com/html/preg.html">Pregnant Mommy Yoga</a>! I know Mommies-to-be who have enjoyed modified Yoga poses while pregnant, and say that the muscles they were able to develop actually helped them in delivering the child. It is a mild-intensity, light activity that can allow you to relieve a little stress (always good!) and be a little more active.</li>
<li>Go for a walk. If it&#8217;s pacing up and down the stairs a few times, if it&#8217;s walking around the neighborhood a little bit, or if you&#8217;re only walking a lap or two around the office during your lunch break? Walk. This helps in the long run. Trust me.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t overindulge! I know when those cravings hit, it feels like you don&#8217;t know how to act! Here&#8217;s a method to trying to control those cravings and how you attack them. Get a big glass of water to go with whatever it is (for my best friend, it was popcorn and strawberry ice cream&#8230; for me, it was dill pickles cut up in rice-a-roni) and be sure to take a sip inbetween bites. This way, you&#8217;re enjoying your craving (if you must,) and limiting how much of it you indulge in all while still getting that &#8220;full&#8221; feeling.</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1205091349a.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-552" title="1205091349a" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1205091349a-190x300.jpg" alt="" width="190" height="300" /></a>Now, some women will chastise me for posting about &#8220;self&#8221; when one is pregnant and should be focusing on feeding the child. As someone who spent 42 weeks &#8220;feeding the child,&#8221; coming out of pregnancy with a slew of health concerns&#8230; there needs to be a safe and sane plan of attack. There needs to be strong consideration for the health of both the mother and the child because the baby needs his or her parents, right? So let&#8217;s not take this that route.</p>
<p>All of us are different. My pregnancy was high-risk because of a lot of what I was doing to myself. Yours may not be. My suggestion &#8211; the most important of all &#8211; would be to talk to your doctor. Try to create a daily nutrition schedule. &#8220;For breakfast, I will have a grapefruit. For a snack, I&#8217;ll have an apple, a pear, or an orange. For lunch&#8230;&#8221; talk about healthy options to swap out, so that you have variety. This is important. Why? Because habits that you develop during the pregnancy will undoubtedly carry on with you beyond your pregnancy. Trust me, you don&#8217;t want those habits to be ones that will cause you to gain even more <em>after</em> the baby.</p>
<p>In closing, be mindful. Focus on staying stress free and relaxed, and everything will come into place.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m always intrigued by people who presume that my weight loss is attributed solely to will power&#8230; or that the [at least] two thirds of Americans simply&#8230; lack will power, and that&#8217;s why they&#8217;re overweight. There&#8217;s this all-or-nothingness that hangs over the concept.</p>
<p>No, really &#8211; you just need to tell yourself &#8220;No,&#8221; and then you&#8217;ll be better able to handle your <em>diet.</em></p>
<p>Think about that: the only reason why two thirds of Americans are overweight is the fact that they don&#8217;t have this uncanny ability to say &#8220;No&#8221; that the other third of Americans appear to have. How silly does that sound? If anything, with looking at <em>those</em> numbers, you&#8217;d think actually <em>having</em> will power is the anomaly&#8230; right? Or does it just make more sense to keep minimizing how difficult it is to lose weight and mock people for not being able to do it?</p>
<p>I think of my own personal experiences with food, and I&#8217;ve got to tell you&#8230;the first, at least, 100lbs that I lost had nothing to do with having will power. It wasn&#8217;t about some ability to &#8220;just say no.&#8221; It wasn&#8217;t even about portion control at first. It certainly wasn&#8217;t about some silly diet. It was 100% about what I was purchasing at the grocery. It was about what I allowed myself to have around me. Period.</p>
<p>And some might say, &#8220;Well, that&#8217;s about self-discipline, isn&#8217;t it?&#8221; I&#8217;d have to say yes, but then again it&#8217;s easy to realize what you need to purchase, and go to the grocery to act on that list and make the appropriate purchases. You go in with a plan and you come out a winner. It is another thing entirely when hunger attacks, and you have to fight the urge to get up and leave the house for fast food.</p>
<p>And again, you might say, &#8220;well surely <em>that</em> part is about self-discipline, yes?&#8221; Again, I&#8217;d have to say yes.  If you&#8217;re experiencing hunger pangs, you absolutely do have to fight against yourself to make the better, safer, healthier decision. You <em>do</em> have to fight and tell yourself &#8220;no, don&#8217;t get in that car!&#8221; You <em>do</em> have to tell yourself, once you&#8217;re already in the car, &#8220;Nooooooooo, don&#8217;t hit that drive thru!&#8221; and let&#8217;s face it: If you&#8217;re already in the drive-thru, you might&#8217;ve already lost the war.</p>
<p>But if so much about weight loss is will power&#8230; where is the myth?</p>
<p>The myth is that will power is the key. It&#8217;s not. If you&#8217;re not used to telling yourself no&#8230; where are you going to develop that herculean strength? If you&#8217;re not used to turning down treats and ignoring cravings, where and how do you start? How can we ensure success? You <em>learn</em> self-discipline&#8230; you don&#8217;t just all-of-a-sudden find this giant mass of it within you. It&#8217;s a growth process. That stupid &#8220;all or nothing&#8221; mentality doesn&#8217;t apply.</p>
<p>If I&#8217;m in a household full of processed foods &#8211; foods studied, tested and engineered for &#8220;maximum flavor intensity&#8221; and &#8220;you-can&#8217;t-eat-just-one-ability&#8221; and &#8220;oh-my-gosh-this-is-so-good-I-can&#8217;t-stop-eating-ity&#8221; &#8211; it&#8217;s supposed to make sense that I can easily say no? That&#8217;s why I believe the first step starts at the grocery store. That&#8217;s where I first developed my ability to say &#8220;No.&#8221; That&#8217;s where I first realized that I needed to be able to use the two feet I was born with, and walk away from certain aisles&#8230; and each time I was successful, I felt a little freer. Just a little&#8230; but a little was enough.</p>
<p>Before long, I was learning about food and improving my ability to say no, simply because I was realizing what was <em>in</em> everything. It certainly wasn&#8217;t food, and I wanted to develop a better relationship with food &#8211; not chemicals &#8211; so I spent a fair amount of time casting the chemicals out. I&#8217;m still developing my relationship with food &#8211; I don&#8217;t know that this is a process with a finite ending to it &#8211; but I can tell you one thing: I&#8217;m intuitive enough that I can dine outside of my home and, within two bites, turn down a dish that I think isn&#8217;t homemade or is simply poorly made. I&#8217;m not going to be hoodwinked into redeveloping bad habits because someone used chemicals in their food. I&#8217;ll pass.</p>
<p>If a company spends $30 million on studies for creating the &#8220;perfect spaghetti sauce,&#8221; and spends <em>years</em> on taste testing for the perfect balance&#8230; then guess what &#8211; they&#8217;re investing all of that money and doing all of that taste testing to find out which sauce will please <strong>the majority of the public</strong>. (Note: This <em>will almost always</em> be a sauce full of sugar and salt. The sugar makes it pleasing on the tongue and in the brain. The salt makes you want to use more of it.) It makes sense, then, that the majority of the public would be able to say no to the sauce? I&#8217;m confused.</p>
<p>The myth of will power is simply that we give it far too much credit. Self-discipline, in my mind, can only be achieved when the playing field is leveled &#8211; that means, no chemical interference &#8211; and if you never take those steps to make that happen, you <em>are</em> going to struggle. Does that mean that it&#8217;s smooth sailing after that? Of course not. There are lots of bumps in the road but for me, the real progress in developing my self-discipline began there.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As we prepare to wrap up our calorie counting challenge, I imagine you may fall into one of four categories:</p>
<ol>
<li>You may have <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">started off counting your calories</a>, but became so disappointed and surprised that you gave up after a few days;</li>
<li>You may have said you don&#8217;t want or need to know your average daily calorie count, and decided not to participate;</li>
<li>You may have not only started your counting but kept <em>up</em> your counting and still are;</li>
<li>Or, you may have started off counting and became so disappointed that you immediately started changing your daily diet to try to meet your daily calorie and weight loss needs.</li>
</ol>

<p>As long are you don&#8217;t fall under number two, I don&#8217;t care where, exactly you fall. The reality is that those numbers you collect &#8211; be it from two days or twelve &#8211; play a monumental part in our ability to maintain and lose weight.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve written about the <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics/">hard numbers</a> before, but I&#8217;d like to get into a little bit more detail about it, today. If you&#8217;ve never read my post about the basics of <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">calorie counting</a>, you might want to check it out.</p>
<p>The facts stand as follows:</p>
<ul>
<li>Our bodies burn a set number of calories each day based on our height and weight.</li>
<li>A body carrying <em>more</em> weight than average is going to require <em>more food</em> than average to<em> maintain </em>that weight.</li>
<li>A body carrying <em>more weight than average</em> is going to require <em>more food than average</em> to <em>gain weight</em> on top of that weight.</li>
<li>A body carrying <em>less weight than average</em> will require less food than average to maintain <em>that</em> weight.</li>
</ul>
<p>To put this into action, let&#8217;s use a 27 year old female who weighs 170 at 5&#8217;8&#8243; with a sedentary lifestyle as an example.</p>
<p>If we plug those numbers into<a href="http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/calories-burned"> one of my favorite calculators</a>, it says that she burns approximately 2,173 calories per day. What this means, is that in order for her body to manage all of the functions it needs to handle, it will burn 2,173 calories. The body will pull those calories either from the food she eats, or the fat stores in the body.</p>
<p>In order for her to not gain or lose any weight over a one week time frame, she&#8217;d have to eat approximately 2,200 calories. That&#8217;s what you call a maintenance count.</p>
<p>In order for her to gain a pound in a week, she&#8217;d have to eat an extra 3,500 calories worth of food. (Remember, 1lb = 3,500 calories.) Aside from the weight of the actual food still in her system (that is, if she doesn&#8217;t go number two regularly), if she eats, on average, 500 calories over her maintenance count each day, she&#8217;ll gain a pound.</p>
<p>In order for her to <em>lose</em> a pound in a week, she&#8217;d have to cut 500 calories from her maintenance count. So, if she made sure her average daily calorie count never exceeded approximately 1,700 calories, she would lose a pound of weight (not including the weight of the actual food still in her body, because she should be going number two regularly.)</p>
<p>Note: If she wants to burn two pounds a week, she can step it up in the activity department and burn approximately 500 extra calories a day &#8211; either through running or swimming or even walking &#8211; and knock out another 3,500 calories in a week. But we&#8217;re not talking about exercise just yet &#8211; that&#8217;s for next week. So for this example, she&#8217;s not working out.</p>
<p>So we&#8217;ve covered the obvious basics, but here&#8217;s where we go wrong.</p>
<p>Say <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-preparing-yourself-for-success">she works her tail off</a>, and gets down to 148, but decides she wants to drop down to 140. Okay, now <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-creating-your-calorie-goal-and-being-honest-about-it">we&#8217;ve got a goal</a>. This is great. She keeps up her same routine &#8211; eat healthy every day, weigh herself on Saturday &#8211; because obviously it&#8217;s working for her.</p>
<p>Except&#8230; it stops working for her.</p>
<p>All of a sudden, the weight loss slows down. It&#8217;s almost two weeks before she even sees a pound fade away. She starts getting discouraged, and <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/its-all-mental/putting-all-your-faith-in-fitness/">starts to feel like she&#8217;s ready to give up</a>.</p>
<p><em>This</em> is where we go wrong.</p>
<p>When we lose 22lbs like this, we HAVE to go back to start. What did I say at the start?</p>
<p><em>To put this into action, let&#8217;s use a 27 year old female who weighs 170 at 5&#8217;8&#8243; with a sedentary lifestyle as an example.</em></p>

<p>A 20lb weight loss alters how many calories our bodies burn in a given day by over100 calories! A woman who is 5&#8217;8&#8243;, weighing in at <em>now</em> 148 pounds, doesn&#8217;t burn 2,173 calories each day &#8211; she burns 2,025! If she&#8217;s counting to make sure she eats 1,600 calories each day,that&#8217;s only a 425 calorie deficit! That&#8217;s not enough to burn a pound every 7 days, it&#8217;s enough to burn a pound every 9 days. Meaning there may only be two Saturdays in the month where she sees any progress on the scale, depending upon where those nine-day markers fall.</p>
<p>After each successful stride in your journey, you must reassess your metabolic rate, be it for an athlete or a couch potato. You have to know what your body is doing, and you have to remember that as your size changes, your capabilities change. Remember, being conscious is a MAJOR part of not only losing weight, but keeping it off. My favorite line is &#8220;If you never eat it, you don&#8217;t have to worry about burning it off.&#8221; But you have to know what you&#8217;re eating in order to know whether or not you <em>should</em> be eating it, right? <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-payoff-why-am-i-doing-this-to-myself">That&#8217;s why I calorie count</a>!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>For our first series ever,</em><em> <strong>Black Girl’s Guide To Weight Loss</strong> will be explaining calorie counting, and ways to win the war. This is post 5 of the series – post 1, <a href="../tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">Defining The Basics of Calorie Counting</a>, can be found here. Comments are always welcomed, and questions will always be answered to the best of my ability.</em></p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-259" title="Burger_King_Paa_Karl_Johan" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Burger_King_Paa_Karl_Johan-300x224.jpg" alt="Burger_King_Paa_Karl_Johan" width="300" height="224" />Let&#8217;s be real. This thing gets tough. It&#8217;s hard to give up your favorite dishes when you find out they&#8217;ve got a million calories. It&#8217;s hard to give up your favorite drink when you realize each one takes up 1/6th of your caloric total for the day. It&#8217;s easy to say &#8220;To hell with this, I&#8217;m going to Burger King.&#8221; Trust me.. I know.</p>
<p>To prepare yourself, take some time &#8211; in advance &#8211; to scope out some healthier alternatives to your daily intake. If you KNOW that driving past that Panera Bread is gonna make you stop in, find a different route to work. Do what you can to avoid temptation, and eventually the foods that you&#8217;re avoiding will not only lose their appeal, but they&#8217;ll become less &#8220;rewarding&#8221; to your body (meaning, you won&#8217;t get that &#8220;Mmmmmmmmmmmmm&#8230;&#8221; feeling), thus making you less likely to indulge in them.</p>
<p>I know some people carry a notebook or a diary all day and mark every little calorie written down&#8230; but let&#8217;s face it &#8211; that&#8217;s not a viable option for everyone. So let&#8217;s set up a sample scanario. You&#8217;ve set yourself a daily calorie level of 1400 calories. Make it easy on yourself. Break it down! 300 calories for breakfast, 400 calories for lunch, 700 calories for dinner! Ta-dow! Nothing to keep track of over the course of a day. No borrowing of calories from breakfast for lunch. Set yourself a strict goal, and each day try to get closer to maintaining it. You may not get it on point for the first few days, and that&#8217;s ok &#8211; habits developed over a lifetime won&#8217;t be erased overnight. If you&#8217;re used to getting/giving yourself what you want, it&#8217;s not going to be easy to change that. It&#8217;s ok to accept and embrace that.</p>
<p>When I first started calorie counting, I was cheating like nobody&#8217;s business! I have a recipe for homemade queso, right? Why was I eating it for breakfast &#8211; well over my calorie limit for that meal &#8211; and skipping lunch? I mean, my queso is deliciously healthy.. but an oversized pot of it? Naw, man! No good! Do you know how painful it is to overeat at breakfast, and not eat until dinner? Path of destruction, right? Losing the battle before I could even reach the field, right? Just awful! Don&#8217;t do it to yourself. Just&#8230; don&#8217;t.</p>

<p>Taken from <a href="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/nutrition/stop-cravings?cm_mmc=Newsletter-_-2009_Jun_17-_-Dose-_-readon">Women&#8217;s Health</a> magazine:</p>
<blockquote><p>Here&#8217;s how this deviousness works: Human beings have what food-industry insiders call a &#8220;bliss point,&#8221; a nirvana of the taste buds triggered by particular amounts of salt, sugar, and fat. Menu scientists (yes, that&#8217;s a job!) at popular restaurant chains and packaged-food corporations use their knowledge of the bliss point to manipulate your appetite, adding salt, sugar, and fat to their products in combinations that are designed to create hedonism on a plate—a taste experience so intense that it kicks the brain&#8217;s pleasure system into overdrive. It&#8217;s like a drug. And like any drug, it leads you to obsess about that moment of pleasure so much that you&#8217;ll do almost anything to prolong or relive it. <p>So, now you have one more piece of information telling you the chips &#8211; literally &#8211; are stacked against you. What do you do? These are things to think about!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2018" title="vegan-organic-dark-chocolate-truffles.jpeg" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/p_1600_1200_68A56717-3FC7-49A8-A5AE-651D0A75B861-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="300" />I&#8217;m someone who loves chocolate. I mean, looooves chocolate. Delicious, heavenly goodness. Yes. I love it. If you catch me at the right moment, you might catch me talking to my chocolate. &#8220;I hate that I have to do this to you, but&#8230; [insert gobbling sound] just know that I love you for everything you&#8217;ve given me..&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s that deep.</p>
<p>So for me, the supermarket checkout lanes were more fun than the actual grocery store. Why? Because the game was &#8220;avoid swiping the entire chocolate rack into your cart with one hand.&#8221; I&#8217;m ashamed to tell you that, some days, I lost. [insert big frown here]</p>
<p>During the down time when I started to let go of processed foods, I had a period where I was looking up <em>everything</em>, much to my detriment. The more I learned, the angrier I became and the more I wound up giving up.</p>
<p>Unfortunately&#8230; one day, I just so happened to turn over a chocolate bar&#8230; and much to my disappointment, I saw the same science lab I&#8217;d been seeing on the rest of my food.</p>
<p>Imagine the look of shock and horror across my face. I don&#8217;t even think I remember what was more frustrating &#8211; the fact that my chocolate wasn&#8217;t, in fact, chocolate&#8230; or the fact that I couldn&#8217;t just allow myself to remain in blissful ignorance. I just <em>had</em> to turn over that darn wrapper and see what the hell I was eating. It wasn&#8217;t pretty.</p>
<p>It was also enough for me to give up chocolate completely. It was like nothing was safe! If I couldn&#8217;t understand the label, I couldn&#8217;t do it. It had to go.</p>
<p>So&#8230; fast forward. I happen across a young woman at the farmer&#8217;s market, who appears to be a chocolatier. She&#8217;s nice, she&#8217;s sweet, she&#8217;s&#8230; selling organic dark chocolate?! Say what? Not only does she have organic dark chocolate truffles, but she has vegan organic dark chocolate truffles? Oh, help me.</p>
<p>At this point, it&#8217;s been almost a year since I&#8217;ve last had chocolate. (I wasn&#8217;t playing when I said I&#8217;d given up.) I bit into her truffle, and it was like the clouds opened up&#8230; a choir appeared behind me singing the Hallelujah chorus&#8230; and a ray of sunlight began to beam on me alone. I could&#8217;ve floated! Immediately, I asked her what comes in one package.</p>

<p>&#8220;In each individually wrapped package, you get two truffles.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Okay,&#8221; as a grab my wallet, reaching for a couple singles. &#8220;How much?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Five dollars.&#8221;</p>
<p>In my mind, the record skipped. Y&#8217;all know I&#8217;m cheap, right? TWO truffles for five dollars? I tried to not have a visible reaction on my face to her price, but I don&#8217;t think I was successful, because she laughed pretty loudly at me. It&#8217;s ok.. I laughed back.</p>
<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry, you&#8217;re not the first to have that reaction!&#8221; she told me. I felt trapped &#8211; I wanted the chocolate, but dang &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t justify paying that much for it, when I know that my former favorites are in the checkout lane for three for a dollar right now!</p>
<p>&#8220;I like to think of my chocolates as an indulgence &#8212; something you definitely don&#8217;t do every day, but when you <em>do</em> do them, they&#8217;re definitely worth the wait.&#8221;</p>
<p>At this time, my daughter started asking for a piece of chocolate to taste, too, and the lady &#8211; charming as she was &#8211; went ahead and gave her a tiny piece. Since I&#8217;m a sucker for people who engage my little one, I went ahead and decided to purchase from her. But as I reached for my five, I told her, &#8220;I could see that&#8230; because I spent way more on chocolate before. If I just bought a really nice piece of chocolate every now and again instead of crap every other day, I&#8217;d still be happy&#8230; and not be broke!&#8221; and we both laughed as she handed me my purchase.</p>
<p>And trust me, my chcolates were undoubtedly worth it.</p>
<p>But that experience taught me a valuable lesson &#8211; a few valuable lessons, to be honest. First, an indulgence is an opportunity to enjoy something&#8230; not hide from the world in it. I had to realize that in my effort to abstain from the chemicals and the foods engineered to &#8220;make me enjoy, love, and want to buy more of them,&#8221; I was forcing myself to stop eating my emotions. I was forcing myself to cope with my realities outside of food&#8230; because food was no longer sooooooooo satisfying to me anymore. So, even though I was afraid of what chemicals might&#8217;ve been in those dark chocolate truffles (she has four ingredients in her truffles and even shared the recipe with me!), it didn&#8217;t matter because it had been so long since I&#8217;d tried to use food as an emtional shield.. the attempt didn&#8217;t even make sense to my body anymore. Besides&#8230; the chemicals weren&#8217;t there anymore. It wouldn&#8217;t have worked, anyway.</p>
<p>Secondly, I was spending a lot of money on chocolate. A <em>lot</em>. Chocolate cookies, chocolate pies, chocolate bars&#8230; but the reality is, the amount of actual chocolate in them is negligible. Most of the &#8220;chocolate&#8221; that I was eating might contain just enough chocolate for the manufacturer to put &#8220;chocolate&#8221; or &#8220;cocoa powder&#8221; on the label.. but the majority of it was some strange flour/oil/&#8221;natural flavors&#8221;/corn syrup combination. So my &#8220;indulgence&#8221; was, really, just me binging on fake chocolate flavored flour paste. My indulgence wasn&#8217;t even worth the time it took to eat it.</p>
<p>If I spent $3 each day on chocolate &#8211; a giant chocolate bar or a big bag of little chocolate bars that couldn&#8217;t even remotely compare to the two bites of chocolate I paid $5 for? Then guess what. Not only did my delicious chocolate ensure that I&#8217;d <em>never</em> go back to the crap chocolate, but it saved me money. Spending $5 every couple of weeks as opposed to $15 <em>each</em> week? C&#8217;mon. I might experience a little sticker shock, but I&#8217;m still saving <em>lots</em> of dough.</p>
<p>Lastly, it&#8217;s okay to indulge. The idea is not to put myself in nutritional prison. The idea is to learn how to curb my habits and guarantee my health. So yes, that means that I have to occasionally tell myself &#8220;No, you don&#8217;t need any chocolate today&#8221; or even &#8220;No, you don&#8217;t need chocolate this week.&#8221; If I truly think about why I &#8220;need&#8221; an indulgence, the answer (if my conscience isn&#8217;t cluttered by hunger) is usually that I <em>don&#8217;t</em> need to indulge. I don&#8217;t <em>need</em> to indulge. I <em>need</em> to make sure that when I <em>want</em> to indulge, it&#8217;s not for the wrong reasons. I <em>need</em> to make sure that both my indulgence <em>and</em> how often I indulge are both in check &#8211; make sure they won&#8217;t prevent me from reaching or maintaining my goals.</p>
<p>I always knew chocolate would do me some good&#8230; I just never thought it&#8217;d be <em>this</em> much.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/kryptonite.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-329" title="kryptonite" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/kryptonite-300x284.jpg" alt="kryptonite" width="300" height="284" /></a>I&#8217;m a firm believer in natural progression. I believe that there is no single catalyst to force a woman to begin to commit to her health. I believe there is no such thing as waking up and saying, &#8220;Yup, today will be the day that I do this thing.&#8221; It just doesn&#8217;t happen that way. Not resulting in lasting life changes, no. I don&#8217;t think so.</p>
<p>Why do I believe that? Because weight loss is complex, overwhelming, and difficult. It&#8217;s hard to dive in head first if you don&#8217;t necessarily know what&#8217;s happening or why it&#8217;s happening to you. There&#8217;s no shame in that, when there are industries who put forth lots of money to keep you confused. We all know that money outweighs and outdoes everything nowadays. This is no different.</p>
<p>I am an advocate of putting one foot in front of the other&#8230; in the direction in which you want to go. As long as you do that, you will always be moving toward your goals.</p>
<p>&#8220;Okay, it&#8217;s easy to talk the talk, but do you have any suggestions on how to actually <em><strong>do</strong></em> it?&#8221;</p>
<p>I hear you thinking it. Of course I do!</p>
<p>First, accept that failure is a part of your growth. Remember that you&#8217;re changing a lifetime of bad habits. You&#8217;re adding things to your daily routine that will change your life. It doesn&#8217;t happen overnight, and you WILL fall down. Even after well over a year at it, I STILL occasionally fall down. I don&#8217;t give up, I don&#8217;t tell myself that I can&#8217;t do it, and I certainly don&#8217;t retreat into food &#8211; the thing that got me to obesity in the first place &#8211; when I feel bad about falling short.</p>
<p>What I <em><strong>do </strong></em>try to do is remind myself of my goals, take a hard look at why I fell short, and try my best to address that &#8220;why.&#8221; For example. If I promised myself no cakes or candies, and I have a slice of cake at a restaurant, the question becomes, &#8220;If I promised that I wouldn&#8217;t, why did I do it anyway?&#8221; If the answer becomes, &#8220;I just couldn&#8217;t resist that picture of that cake staring at me throughout dinner!&#8221; then I have to rationalize with myself a way to avoid the temptation. For those of you wondering, yes, this was a real issue for me. How did I overcome? I stopped going out to restaurants until I could build up the ability to overlook the pictures, and learn how to say no quickly, and <em><strong>mean it</strong></em>.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Decisions.jpeg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-331" title="Decisions" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Decisions-300x240.jpg" alt="Decisions" width="300" height="240" /></a>Next, accept that you have to make some hard decisions. Not hitting the restaurants? That&#8217;s a HARD decision! Please believe I love my On The Border taco salad (1,700 calories, 124g fat, 2,620mg sodium), my Cheesecake Factory Vanilla Bean Cheesecake (870cals, 558cals from fat, 62g fat), and, well&#8230; some other stuff we don&#8217;t have to talk about here. However, my decision not only saved me money, but saved myself calories, as well. Hard decision accepted, reward gained.</p>
<p>Thirdly, resolve within yourself that the follow-through won&#8217;t be easy. If you can&#8217;t stop going to McDonalds after work; and you realize that it&#8217;s because since you take the shortest route home, you can&#8217;t help but stop in to help you suffer through traffic&#8230; what options do you have? Better yet, what options do you allow yourself? Sure, you can buy healthy snacks and keep them in the car, but what if that doesn&#8217;t work? Are you willing to take the extra 5 minutes in your ride to avoid the McDonalds? Can you do that for yourself, even though it&#8217;s hard? It might not be easy to see in the beginning, but you&#8217;re teaching yourself a plethora of lessons with that one action:</p>
<ol>
<li>It&#8217;s ok to make difficult decisions for ME.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s ok to suffer for my own greater good.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s ok to push myself, because I am changing ME for the better.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s ok to take the harder route, because I will be stronger in the end because of it.</li>
<li>I am able to do this.</li>
</ol>
<p>Remember that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow, no matter how successful the endeavor is or is not. As long as you take something away from the situation, it was not in vain. As long as you take away <em>something</em> from the situation and grow from it, you are putting one foot in front of the other. As long as you&#8217;ve learned one more way to get closer to your goal of a healthier lifestyle, you&#8217;re well on your way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/caveman.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-457" title="caveman" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/caveman-300x200.jpg" alt="caveman" width="300" height="200" /></a>Let me tell you a story.</p>
<p>Once upon a time, in a land not very far from your home&#8230; lived mankind. No fast cars, no shiny structures, no skyscrapers, nothing. Just man.. rock&#8230; and animals.</p>
<p>See, this worked for man because his only task was to hunt wildlife, and gather his kill for his family. That was his responsibility. His purpose was to bring the salt and fat from the animal to the family. Not work, not bills&#8230; just hunt. Because life was much simpler then,<strong> this</strong> was man&#8217;s sole source of stress.</p>
<p>One day, man could not hunt. Every time he threw his spear, he&#8217;d miss his prey. He just couldn&#8217;t catch SQUAT! His family was to go hungry and he just&#8230; he couldn&#8217;t take it. The stress started to build up inside of him.</p>
<p>Because stress about the inability to eat is the only source of stress for man, his body became used to the eventual chain of events. His body knows: Lots of stress = lack of food coming in. How did his body react? His body decided to hold on to what it had &#8211; by way of diminishing the amount of energy his body could exert all at one time, by way of making sure his body took a <em>very</em> long time to lose weight, by way of making sure it held onto every pound and fat cell it could. This bodily reaction would only further compel man to step up his hunting skills&#8230; why? Because he didn&#8217;t want to feel that way! He didn&#8217;t want his family to feel that way! He had to get his caveman hustle on! When man was finally able to tackle that antelope or whatever-what-have-you, the fats and salts in the meat were sooooo satisfying that they would cure man of the bodily reaction to stress.</p>
<p>Compare this to emotional eating. The body&#8217;s reaction doesn&#8217;t change no matter what variables you swap out. Regardless if the stress comes from traffic, bad work day, or family problems&#8230; the body&#8217;s reaction to stress has not evolved as fast as society has. Now, we can get food within ten minutes if we drive or own a microwave. So presuming our body believes that stress is caused by a &#8220;famine on the way,&#8221; then it&#8217;s going to trigger feelings to make you go hunt! Our bodies just don&#8217;t know how easy it is to get food just yet. It hasn&#8217;t caught up.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/stress.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-458" title="stress" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/stress-300x225.jpg" alt="stress" width="300" height="225" /></a>This is what compels us to believe that emotional eating is the answer.</p>
<p>Emotional eating is defined as eating for a purpose other than curing hunger. If you&#8217;re eating for that gooey &#8220;Mmmmm&#8221; feeling, then yes &#8211; chances are, you might be emotionally eating. <a href="http://www.medicinenet.com/emotional_eating/article.htm">Approximately 75% of all overeating is attributed to emotional eating.</a></p>
<p>Because our bodies always provide this same reaction to food in a time of stress, our body&#8217;s reward system tells us that it makes sense to eat when stressed. It&#8217;s the fastest way to rid ourselves of this negative emotion, right? Stressed out about money and bills? You&#8217;re probably going to find the cheapest and quickest way to stick something in your mouth to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling. For some of us, that means we&#8217;ll be Dollar Menunaires for an hour. For some of us, that means we&#8217;ll be hittin&#8217; up the Edy&#8217;s or Blue Bell. For others, we&#8217;ll be needing peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, or chocolate chip cookies.</p>
<p>I remember being told yearrrrrs ago by my sorority sister who was a psych professional that I really needed to focus on developing better coping skills. That I needed to find proper outlets for relieving my stress as opposed to relying on external things to relieve internal stresses. She told me that finding a way to better cope would help me feel liberated from this narrow path I had set myself on with how to make myself feel better. Using food as my only means of making myself feel better &#8211; inside AND outside of my pregnancy &#8211; is a big reason behind why I gained so much to begin with.</p>
<p>So, what can we do to win the struggle with our body&#8217;s natural response to stress?</p>
<ul>
<li>We can make conscious efforts to take better care of ourselves. Try to avoid allowing stressors to pile up on you. Do you often run into the same types of problems? Start paying attention to yourself! No more auto pilot. Notice when the same things pop up and cause you stress, and start figuring out better ways to manage that. Decreasing the stress in your life decreases the opportunity to emotionally eat.</li>
<li>Make emotional eating more difficult. I stopped carrying cash&#8230; then I stopped carrying my wallet. Is that extreme? Very. I also had an extreme case of emotional eating. I ate to feel fulfilled. I wasn&#8217;t <em>ful</em>filled. I was just&#8230; full. If traffic stresses you out so you grab some McDonalds on the ride (thus making traffic worse &#8211; I see you eating your Big Mac instead of paying attention to the stoplight), then find a stress-free route. One that doesn&#8217;t have a fast food joint on the way that&#8217;ll compel you to indulge.</li>
<li>Give yourself a break. Give yourself a reward that is more lasting than the temporary satisfaction of a chocolate chip cookie. Try to budget a liiiiiittle time for relaxation. I give myself time for yoga every single day. The way I push my body to the limits allows me to relieve stress, and I come out of it feeling light as a feather with a new perspective on how to tackle whatever was originally stressing me.</li>
<li>Awareness is key &#8211; if being at your mother-in-law&#8217;s house is a stressor that makes you feel like you have to eat in order to cope&#8230; be aware of how that triggers you. Prepare yourself with healthier comforting foods. Luckily for me, I went from Verona cookies to goldfish crackers to tea. Yes. Tea. As much as I love my mother, I fear that she might send me back to the Verona cookies, though. Ha! (I only say that because I know she reads the site. <img src='http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> )</li>
<li>Go shoot something. I&#8217;m only mildly joking, here. I say this on twitter all the time&#8230; I get stressed out? I grab Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and do a few missions.</li>
<li>If you know you&#8217;re stressed, make food your last resort. Turn on a good tear-jerker movie. Hit the sidewalk and take a stroll (or a jog.) Take up kickboxing. Take a hot shower.</li>
<li>Try a nap instead. If you&#8217;re prone to wanting something warm before bed, get into a nice soothing tea. I have boxessssss of tea in the cabinet. No shame in my game.</li>
<li>Seek help. Remember, even though she was my friend, I had to have a psychiatric professional shine a little light for me to help guide me on my path. I&#8217;m a big believer in support systems and if it takes adding a little help to the team to get you on the path to better help, then that&#8217;s what&#8217;s best.</li>
</ul>
<p>How does the story end? Welllll&#8230; more on that later. (Something&#8217;s gotta keep you on the edge of your seat until next time, right? Right?!)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>For our first series ever</em><em>, <strong>Black Girl’s Guide To Weight Loss</strong> will be explaining calorie counting, and ways to win the war. This is post 3 of the series – post 1, <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">Defining The Basics of Calorie Counting</a>, can be found here. Comments are always welcomed, and questions will always be answered to the best of my ability. <img class="wp-smiley" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" /></em></p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-250" title="1196242_96901825" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/1196242_96901825-225x300.jpg" alt="1196242_96901825" width="225" height="300" />Keeping in mind those constants that I listed in the <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">first installment</a>, head over to <a href="http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/calories-burned">this page</a> and enter your information. It&#8217;ll tell you your estimated Body Mass Index (or BMI) &#8211; I know, cringeworthy, right? &#8211; as well as an estimated value for how many calories your body burns in a 24 hour time period. Then head over to <a href="http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/dee">this page</a>, and do the same. Compare the two values for your daily calorie expenses, and take the lower of the values. Hold on to that number. Now, do a food journal for one day. Don&#8217;t try to eat &#8220;better&#8221; than you usually do.. just write down a day&#8217;s worth of what you&#8217;re eating. No calorie values yet.. just merely what you&#8217;re eating. During the next day (&#8217;cause doing it the same day just might depress you), sit down and google the caloric values of the foods you&#8217;re eating. Make sure you&#8217;re sitting in a leveled chair when you do&#8230; because you might just tip over.</p>
<p>Compare the number of calories your body burns in a 24 hour period to the amount of calories you took in during a 24 hour period. Think about the days you&#8217;ve eaten more than you did the day you wrote everything down. Think about the foods you might&#8217;ve intentionally left off the list as a means of cushioning your ego. Think about how often you eat more than what you wrote down. Is it pretty darn often? Think about the days where you eat nothing but fast food. Is your calorie count up near the 3,000s? Is it IN the 3,000s?</p>
<h3>Setting the goal</h3>
<p>Going back to that calorie count&#8230; take a look at that number you came up with. Weight loss is about creating a deficit &#8211; more calories burned than taken in. If you&#8217;re maintaining the weight you&#8217;ve put on, it&#8217;s because this deficit doesn&#8217;t exist. You&#8217;re either nor burning enough calories, or you&#8217;re eating too many calories. Having said that, if you create a deficit of 500 calories a day (meaning, if you eat 500 calories less than you &#8220;usually&#8221; do), you will lose 1lb a week. Create a deficit of 1000 calories a day, you will lose 2lbs (1000 calories multiplied by 7 days a week: 1000 x 7 = 7000 divided by 3500 calories in one pound equals 2lbs.) If you create a deficit of 1000 calories, and burn 500 a day walking/running, you will lose 3lbs per week (1500 x 7 divided by 3500). I&#8217;m suuure you get my drift, right? The better you plan, the better you prepare, the more likely you are to succeed.</p>
<h3>Be honest with yourself</h3>
<p>I&#8217;ve read several books about scientific studies in relation to obesity and they tend to say, in short: <em>&#8220;In efforts to attempt to track the eating habits of overweight and obese individuals, we gave them a journal to document their daily intake of food. Considering the number of methods used to monitor intake, it was easy to determine that overweight people were more likely to lie about not only what they&#8217;d eaten, but how much of it they&#8217;d eaten.&#8221; </em></p>
<p>I don&#8217;t mention that as a put down &#8211; I mention that because I know I did it, and didn&#8217;t even know it. It&#8217;s another method of consciousness. It&#8217;s also another reason to make SURE you&#8217;re being honest with yourself. It&#8217;s vital to know what you&#8217;re putting in your body, so that you know what kind of dragon you need to slay. Lying to yourself might save your ego, but it does nothing for the rest of you, especially your weight.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s ok to admit you have very little control over your eating habits &#8211; it&#8217;s ok to admit that your discipline might be lacking. There is an industry that makes billions off of your inability to control yourself, and they have millions invested in ensuring that you never get it. It&#8217;s ok to admit that this beast is on your back. This, here, will help you gain control&#8230; and it starts with being honest with yourself.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-76" title="food diary" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/food-diary-150x150.jpg" alt="food diary" width="200" height="200" />One thing that I realized about myself in this journey to lose the weight, was that I needed to address my eating habits. I couldn&#8217;t understand what was happening that was making this process so unbelievably difficult for me. I mean, I was working out 7 days a week for at least an hour at a time. I did a full 30 minutes full blast on the elliptical, another 20 minutes in weight training, and 10 minutes on my core. What was happening?</p>
<p>I bought myself an iTouch. Just&#8230; because. I figured if I was going to throw myself into disappointment again, I&#8217;d at least do it with a new toy. Sure enough, I got hooked. Music? AND videos? AND apps? Wait&#8230; what are apps? After a little snooping around, I find out that I can keep up with news, play games, and do actual important stuff with these things. Neato.</p>
<p>So, I go lookin&#8217;, and lookin&#8217;, and lookin&#8217;&#8230; and I find an app called Lose It! that basically operates as a food journal. I once purchased a little black notebook where I&#8217;d write down everything I ate, but it quickly lost steam for me. LoseIt!, for some reason, was easier for me.</p>
<p>Using LoseIt!, I was able to input what I weighed at the start, what my goal weight was, and when I wanted to reach it. I added the foods I ate during the day &#8211; as honest as I could &#8211; and I added the amount of water and other drinks I drank.</p>
<p>When I tell you this was the most powerful thing I could&#8217;ve done for myself&#8230; believe it!</p>
<p>Now, mind you. I&#8217;m not necessarily advocating you go out and get the LoseIt! app (although, as of this writing, it is free and anyone who has an iTouch or iPhone really should look into it) because not everyone has or uses the iPhone/iTouch. The downside to the app, for me, is that it doesn&#8217;t allow you to input the time at which you ate. The LoseIt! app also, supposedly, mines data from our inputs as well, and some people might not be thrilled with that. (Yes, I AM usually the conspiracy theorist here, but the benefit outweighed the data collecting, to me.)</p>
<p>What I AM advocating, is the use of a food diary. My food diary showed me exactly where my problems were. I was eating too much of&#8230; well, everything. I had no portion control. I was partaking in a giant amount of fat and sugar. My carb meters were off the charts. I simply wasn&#8217;t doing what I knew in my heart I needed to do. Taking in over 2100 calories a day wasn&#8217;t going to help me lose weight. In fact, the only reason I didn&#8217;t gain astronomical amounts of weight was because of the 7-10 hours a week I was spending in the gym. After 6 months and only losing 20 lbs, something needed to really change.</p>
<p>The first two weeks of using my food diary were painful. I was able to track my carb, fat, sodium, fiber, protein, cholesterol and caloric intake. I spent lots of time researching what I was putting in my body in terms of fast food and restaurants, and the nutritional values for those meals. Seeing the numbers in front of me was painful. Painful! I used to LOVE tearing into a Checkers/Rally&#8217;s Fried Chicken Sandwich with large fries and a banana shake&#8230; until I started looking for their nutritional information.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s when it started hitting me like a ton of bricks:</p>
<p>An order of <a href="http://www.dietfacts.com/html/nutrition-facts/checkers-drive-in-fries-58195.htm">large fries from Checkers</a>? <em>590 Calories, 38g of fat (20g of saturated fat, 2g of trans fat), 40mg of cholesterol, 1410mg of sodium, 7g of protein, 57g of carbohydrates.</em></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.dietfacts.com/html/nutrition-facts/checkers-drive-in-crispy58178.htm">chicken sandwich</a>? <em>740 calories, 41g of fat (13g saturated), 70mg of cholesterol, 2190mg sodium, 60g of carbohydrates (13g sugars), and 34g of protein.</em></p>
<p>And lastly, but certainly not least? The <a href="http://www.dietfacts.com/html/nutrition-facts/checkers-drive-in-banana58212.htm">banana shake</a>: <em>650 calories, 18g of fat (14g saturated), 75mg of cholesterol, 300mg sodium, 105g of carbohydrates (81g sugars), and 16g of protein.</em></p>
<p>What was I doing to myself? Don&#8217;t you know, I had to break out a calculator to tabulate how much I was putting into my body in ONE MEAL? 1,980 calories &#8211; almost the value of what&#8217;s recommended to take in over the course of one day. 3900mg of sodium. 222g of carbohydrates, about 40% of it being sugar. Seriously&#8230; what was I doing to myself? And why did it take me actually writing it down and committing myself to researching it for me to truly see it? Why didn&#8217;t I KNOW what I was doing to myself? (That&#8217;s another post entirely, but we won&#8217;t talk about that today.)</p>
<p>Slowly, I began to wean myself off of things that were doing me in. I no longer ate fast food. Sure enough, I lost almost 8 lbs immediately. Strange, huh?</p>
<p>A food diary highlights the weaknesses in your diet. It shows you patterns in your eating habits that you might not&#8217;ve noticed. Do you eat a lot of fried foods? How about a lot of bread? Do you have one heck-uv-a-sweet tooth? Maybe you eat a lot of foods that require TONS of seasoning? Variety, literally, is the spice of life.. and a food diary is the best way to show you where you could inject a little bit of just that &#8211; variety.</p>

</em></p>
<p><em></em>Calorie counting is comprised of two elements:</p>
<ul>
<li> A) Gauging approximately how many calories you burn in a given day, and</li>
<li> B) Setting a total calorie maximum for how many calories you will take in during a 24 hour time frame.</li>
</ul>
<p>This is a very controlled method for managing caloric input &#8211; not eating anything unless you know how many calories it will add to your daily total. That means&#8230; if you&#8217;re planning to visit a restaurant? You&#8217;d better google those nutritional values for their dishes, and pick a dish that will keep you under your caloric intake.</p>
<h3>Conscious eating, and the power of &#8220;No&#8221;</h3>
<p>This also requires a LOT of consciousness. It forces you to consider the things you eat every day &#8211; every&#8230; day &#8211; without thinking. Do you leave the house in search of the nearest Starbucks to get your morning Strawberries &amp; Crème Frappuccino? Well, if you&#8217;re calorie counting, you&#8217;d have to consider that your morning drink (not even food!) costs you <strong>750 calories, 120grams of sugars, and 15grams of fat</strong>. Say you don&#8217;t hit Starbucks in the morning. Instead, you give yourself an extra 20 minutes and hit up McDonalds for a Deluxe Breakfast. Calorie counting? You&#8217;d need to know &#8211; in advance &#8211; that this entire meal just cost you <strong>1,370 calories, 161grams of carbohydrates, and 64.5grams of fat </strong>(consider that, on average, MY fat intake value for a person 6&#8242; fall at ~200lbs is no more than 80grams&#8230; that&#8217;d leave me 15.5 grams to enjoy the rest of the day!) without even mentioning the 2,335mg of sodium. McDonalds&#8217; would&#8217;ve screwed up your whole calorie day! You would&#8217;ve been inhaling kool-aid packets all day for sustenance!</p>
<p>Calorie counting requires a LOT of what I refer to when I say conscious consumerism. It means taking 10 seconds to think about what you&#8217;re preparing to do before you do it. Did a co-worker come over to your desk and ask you to dip out with her and dine at Macaroni Grill after work? Is your favorite dish the Parmesan Crusted Sole? Well how, exactly, does <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>2,190 calories</em></span>, 141grams of fat, and 145grams of carbohydrates</strong> fit into your total caloric intake? Do you think you can go without ordering your favorite dish out of habit? You spot that the Pollo Magro is only 320 calories.. could you commit yourself to ordering that instead? Can you be honest with yourself and say &#8220;No&#8221; if you really can&#8217;t do it? Do you have the wherewithal to tell your co-worker &#8220;No&#8221; if you know the temptation is too great?</p>
<p>Trust me, it takes about ten seconds to run this scenario through your mind one good time, if you&#8217;re being honest with yourself. And I&#8217;ll admit it &#8211; in the beginning of MY experience with calorie counting, I had to learn the QUICK way how to simply say &#8220;No.&#8221; It might even make you feel like you&#8217;re talking to yourself&#8230; and then you might feel awkward because you actually respond, but it&#8217;s for the better. That &#8220;No&#8221; is important, because it is FAR easier than &#8220;Let me get an Egg McMuffin (300 calories, 12g fat, 30g carbohydrates &#8211; less fat than that Starbucks drink that I mentioned up there) instead of that big giant dish of pancakes&#8230; mmm, with that syrup&#8230; oh, and that hash brown? Hmm&#8230;&#8221; Please believe, in 2 seconds flat, it turns into &#8220;Actually, let me just get the Deluxe Breakfast instead.&#8221; You must be at the ready. No auto-pilot. You must <em>always</em> be conscious.</p>
<p>Calorie counting requires that you take a long&#8230;hard&#8230;look at the foods you&#8217;re eating at home. Lots of microwaveables? Calorie counting demands that you take a hard look at each item. Could you make this better at home? If not &#8211; and that&#8217;s OK if you can&#8217;t &#8211; would you be better off with another dish, instead? Look long and hard and the caloric values on that nutrition label. Does it say 1 serving is equal to 400 calories? If so, does it say that there are actually TWO servings in the entire dish? You know, the dish packaged like it&#8217;s made for only one person? <strong>You have to be conscious!</strong></p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-170" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/grilled-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" />What do you get from calorie counting, you may ask? Let me tell you what it did for me (really, that&#8217;s all I can do at this point, LOL.)</p>
<p>Calorie counting reinforced my ability to be a conscious consumer. Meaning, I am much more able, now, to really take a good hard look at what I&#8217;m eating and gauge exactly how much I&#8217;m putting into my mouth. I no longer have the insane portion distortion from which I used to suffer.</p>
<p>Calorie counting gave me the ability to say &#8220;No.&#8221; Checkers? &#8220;No.&#8221; Big greasy 2,000 calorie lo mein platter from PF Chang? &#8220;No.&#8221; Eating half a box of fried taquitos in one sitting? &#8220;No.&#8221; Firecracker Stuffed [with cheese and everything else under the kitchen sink <em><strong>and</strong></em> fried] Jalapenos wiiiiiiiiiiiiith the entire thing of Chili Con Queso (<strong>1,950 calories, 134g of fat, and</strong> <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>6,540 milligrams of sodium</strong></em></span>) from On the Border? &#8220;Hell No.&#8221; I haven&#8217;t even BEEN to Checkers in 7 months. I&#8217;m starting to think I&#8217;d like to keep it that way. My newly developed self control allows me to follow through on that thought.</p>
<p>Calorie counting taught me how to gauge what&#8217;s in what I&#8217;m eating, thanks to all the looking up I did. (Note: Mind you, I OD&#8217;d on the looking up, thanks to that Lose It! app for the iPhone/iTouch, of foods just because I could.. no one has to be that obsessive with it to be successful. Looking it up the night after is just as effective.) I can now gauge how many calories is in that alfredo dish at Olive Garden. I can guess how many calories are in that KFC macaroni salad. I now know to avoid most dishes with a creamy consistency because of the potential fat levels, and that&#8217;s without even looking it up. I now know to avoid most salads at restaurants without telling them &#8220;cheese, avocado, dressing, and any other fattening mess on the side, please.&#8221;</p>
<p>Calorie counting taught me how to be more aware of what I was feeding my family. Please believe that it&#8217;s made me a more watchful cook for the people who eat from my kitchen. This has resulted in us all becoming healthier.</p>
<p>Calorie counting has helped me to understand my limits. I can&#8217;t control myself when it comes to goldfish crackers. I can control myself if I have ginger snaps in the house. My daughter might despise me for not keeping goldfish in the house anymore, but she&#8217;s happy with how I doll up her ginger snaps. Less sodium for her, too.</p>
<p>Calorie counting made me aware of the empty calories I was eating or specifically for me&#8230; the empty calories I was <em>drinking</em>. I eventually gave up sodas, except for mixing them with my alcohol&#8230; but then I eventually gave up alcohol. I occasionally had pop when I had an ice cream float, but then I stopped eating so much ice cream! It just became less of an indulgence for me. If my favorite soda was 200 calories in each time I drank it, and I&#8217;m only allowed 400 calories for lunch&#8230; what on Earth am I supposed to eat with it? Two pieces of cardboard? Pfft!</p>
<p>As I think of more benefits, I&#8217;ll probably edit this and add more.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-217" title="calories" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/calories.jpg" alt="calories" width="250" height="251" /><em>For our first series ever,</em><em> <strong>Black Girl&#8217;s Guide To Weight Loss</strong> will be explaining calorie counting, and ways to win the war. Comments are always welcomed, and questions will always be answered to the best of my ability. <img src='http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </em></p>
<p>A reader hit me up with a question about calorie counting. Basically, sharing with me that for her goal of losing a couple of pounds a week, there&#8217;s information all across the Internet saying to shoot for a goal of 1200-1500 calories.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s all well and good, but&#8230; what if that&#8217;s what you were eating before? How do you take in 1500 calories? Where do you go from where you are now?</p>
<p>Let me explain what calorie counting is, and what it does for a person. Then we can get into appropriate calorie numbers.</p>
<p>First, the constants. What I mean by &#8220;constants&#8221; is the concepts that will be the same no matter WHO you are, how much you weigh, how tall you are, how much you want to lose, or how active you are. So far so good?</p>
<h3>The Constants</h3>
<ol>
<li><strong>Pounds.</strong> Three thousand five hundred (3 500) calories is equal to a pound. What this means is that for every 3500 calories you burn, you will have burned a pound&#8217;s worth of energy.</li>
<li><strong>Calories.</strong> Calories are what your body burns in order to function. (Think of when you hit a cardio machine in the gym, and it tells you how many calories you&#8217;ve burned so far &#8211; it&#8217;s telling you the amount of energy your body has used thus far in order to do your exercise.)</li>
<li><strong>Metabolism.</strong> Metabolism manages this behavior. Meaning, when your body needs energy to carry out a function &#8211; be it running a mile or eating a steak &#8211; your metabolism facilitates that energy burst. Provided you don&#8217;t have a thyroid problem, your metabolism is able to move as quickly or as slowly as you do. <a href="http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/guide/make-most-your-metabolism?print=true">WebMD</a> says that it <em>&#8220;not only convert food into fuel but also affect how efficiently you burn that fuel.&#8221;</em></li>
<li><strong>Weight loss. </strong>Weight loss is absolutely about creating a deficiency in <em>calories taken in </em>so that there is an<em> excess of calories burned. </em>No matter how you managed to find yourself overweight, the bottom line still stands &#8211; we will all lose it the same way.</li>
</ol>
<h3>The Sticky Part</h3>
<ol>
<li><strong>Pounds. </strong>We all weigh differently, and we all got our excess weight in different manners. For me, it was a combination of college and pregnancy. For my best friend, it was a strong decrease in activity levels between jobs. For my professor, it was emotional eating. Some of us have always been overweight, and others of us packed on a large amount of weight in a small amount of time. (As I currently state in my about-me section, I packed it on at a rate of 20lbs per year. Yikes.)</li>
<li><strong>Calories.</strong> We all eat different amounts! Why? Because we all weigh differently, live in different climates, and our bodies react differently to certain calorie levels. To the person who might be burning a ton of calories but yet is still eating more than she&#8217;s burning per day, to the person who may have a great day with calorie levels only to follow it up with a day horrible enough to ruin three good eating days. We all are in the same boat, we all got there the same way (eating more than we burned,) but where we&#8217;re coming from will differ.</li>
<li><strong>Metabolism.</strong> Our metabolism &#8211; our body&#8217;s ability to use energy and use it properly &#8211; changes over time. In our teens, our bodies are always burning energy like crazy because we&#8217;re growing. When we&#8217;re pregnant, our bodies are burning an excess of energy because we&#8217;re facilitating a life inside of our bodies. As we age, our metabolism&#8217;s power decreases by about 5% per decade. The amount of activity our bodies have to endure determines how fast and how often our metabolism moves. So, yes&#8230; you could keep your metabolism burning by eating all day &#8211; but are you eating celery sticks or cheetos? <img src='http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li><strong>Weight loss.</strong> After a very long back-and-forth debate with a visitor, I&#8217;ve learned that some of us are simply beaten. For one reason or another, we believe this struggle is much more difficult than it actually may be, and that&#8217;s without trying it the old-fashioned way. Our 40s, 50s, and 60s babies didn&#8217;t have to fight demons like this, because their food was actually food when they were in their 20s and 30s. Their portions were smaller&#8230; so it was nothing to &#8220;clean their plates.&#8221; Their dishes were more wholesome. They weren&#8217;t devouring 7-layer dips, or pound-sized bowls of pasta when they went out to eat. They simply were unequipped to handle the struggle, and so we&#8217;re all left feeling a little helpless. We all are a bit clueless as to why we&#8217;re less healthy, why we can&#8217;t get this burden off our backs, and how we can successfully lose these last few nagging pounds.</li>
</ol>
<p>Having said <strong>all that</strong>, now I think we&#8217;re ready to get down to business.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em><strong><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/thy/3079671188/"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-16024" title="gelato" src="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gelato-300x199.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>Q: Erika do you find anything wrong if on occassion you just want that scoop of ice cream or to try a small piece of cake…or would you suggest just to try not to introduce those things back in your lifestyle change any longer?</strong></em></p>
<p>A: My answer, at first, was simple. &#8220;It depends. Are you a sugar addict? If you were someone who abused alcohol, would it make sense for you to take &#8216;one scoop?&#8217; Do you think you could stop at &#8216;one scoop?&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>I mean, the realities of dealing with sugar, as a recovering sugar addict, are different from dealing with alcohol as a recovering alcoholic because you&#8217;ll still have to deal with sugar in some form or fashion in ways you wouldn&#8217;t have to deal with alcohol&#8230; but if you&#8217;re only a year or so into dealing with emotional eating, chances are you might not be far enough beyond your habituation to not do it.</p>
<p>Let me see if I can explain it this way.</p>
<p>I know that there are some foods that, because I spent so many years of my life eating them a certain way, I may very well never be able to eat them again. And that&#8217;s not to say anything of my ability to recover from being an emotional eater, but that <em>is</em> to speak of the fact that it&#8217;s, unfortunately, very easy to maintain a habit just off sheer muscle memory regardless of whether or not the emotional connection to the act still exists.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a lot like driving in a car on a path you&#8217;ve always taken.. and all of a sudden, you decide to start veering off and taking another path. You&#8217;re not entirely sure where you&#8217;re going on your new path, but all it takes is for you to wind up on a familiar intersection that leads you back on the path you used to take&#8230; and before you know it, your old habits lead you to overindulging in ways that used to be comfortable&#8230; and unhealthy.</p>
<p>For me, I know that certain things set me off. I know certain kinds of things set me off. I know what candies and &#8220;snacks&#8221; and &#8220;treats&#8221; used to set me off, and none of those things are allowed in my house. I&#8217;m pretty damned adamant about that, too. I&#8217;ll never know if, by now, I&#8217;m beyond the habituation that compelled me to overeat in such a fashion&#8230; because I won&#8217;t be testing it out.</p>
<p>While those things aren&#8217;t allowed in my house, I&#8217;m also at the point in my own journey where I can turn them down when I encounter them in other places. I don&#8217;t get the cakes. I don&#8217;t get the cookies. I can turn down the offerings at parties, now &#8211; not because I&#8217;m addicted to party food but often because it&#8217;s, simply, bad food &#8211; and I&#8217;m happier because of it. Not because I can successfully &#8220;deprive&#8221; myself, but because I can protect myself from my former bad habits.</p>
<p>That being said, if the question is &#8220;do you <em>ever</em> indulge?&#8221; then the answer is &#8220;hell yes.&#8221; My indulgences are different now, and are much more meaningful. I&#8217;ve written about the <a title="How To Indulge Like A Grown Up: What Chocolate Taught Me" href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/its-all-mental/how-to-indulge-like-a-grown-up-what-chocolate-taught-me/">vegan dark chocolate truffles</a> that I&#8217;d fallen in love with. Every now and again, we hit the gelato shop around the corner and grab a small &#8211; and still, somehow, hellapricey &#8211; serving of gelato. Quality ingredients, homemade and hand made, enjoyable, delicious flavor, no overabundance of sugar or salt meant to overcompensate for the lack of flavor&#8230; it&#8217;s what indulgence is meant to be, for me.</p>
<p>Because I&#8217;m not an emotional eater, I don&#8217;t need to indulge often. It&#8217;s not a daily thing for me. It&#8217;s barely a weekly thing for me. I have an appreciation for good cooking and good food &#8211; and, by default, good desserts as well &#8211; that doesn&#8217;t affect how I think or feel in a harmful way&#8230;. which means it doesn&#8217;t affect my body in a way that interferes with my goals.</p>
<p>So, to put it simply, I think one&#8217;s decision to indulge depends on a lot of factors, and it takes a lot of self-assessment to help one determine how it fits in for them. It takes a lot of honesty to understand and admit where I fall short, but once I know my weaknesses, it can only help to strngthen my resolve. Best steps I&#8217;ve ever taken.</p>

Yes. TWO.</p></div>
<p>I get so annoyed by people who say things like, &#8220;Oh, I don&#8217;t believe in calorie counting.&#8221; or &#8220;Calorie counting is silly.&#8221; I always ask them, &#8220;Well, why?&#8221; It&#8217;s almost always some dumb answer like, &#8220;Well, I don&#8217;t want to know how many calories my favorite foods are.&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to prevent myself from enjoying my favorite foods because of a few calories,&#8221; or even &#8220;I just think it&#8217;s stupid.&#8221;</p>
<p>Um, so that&#8217;s supposed to be enough to convince me &#8211; <em>ME</em> &#8211; to give up what I&#8217;m doing? Because <em>you </em>don&#8217;t like it?</p>
<p>Let me explain to you the reason why calorie counting is a practice that <em>I</em> believe in. I can sum it up in one word.</p>
<p>Awareness.</p>
<p>When I first started my journey, I believed that my eating habits were wholly unrelated to my exercise. I was told &#8220;Exercise, and the weight will come off.&#8221; I wasn&#8217;t told &#8220;Exercise and consciously limit your intake to reasonable levels appropriate for what your body needs, and the weight will come off.&#8221; <em>I</em> got incomplete advice, and that was to my detriment.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t until months later that I realized that regardless of my exercise habits, if I wasn&#8217;t putting crap in my mouth on such a regular basis, my body couldn&#8217;t possibly keep putting on the weight that I was as quickly as I was. If I wasn&#8217;t eating as poorly as I was, I wouldn&#8217;t be overeating in search of that &#8220;belly full&#8221; feeling. If I wasn&#8217;t clinging to such poorly made foods, I <em>couldn&#8217;t</em> possibly overeat the way I was, and consume the amount of calries I was consuming.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not the message you get every day.</p>
<p>And I&#8217;m not gonna lie &#8211; there are some people who don&#8217;t come from that kind of meager understanding of food. There might be people out there who understand that concept of &#8220;It&#8217;s ok to indulge, but you do it moderately.&#8221; There might be people who understand that the &#8220;true&#8221; definition of &#8220;moderately&#8221; means &#8220;a couple of bites, then push it away.&#8221; Someone like me, who had never understood the concept of &#8220;moderately&#8221; or never really embraced the concept of &#8220;limiting myself,&#8221; &#8220;clean eating&#8221; or even &#8220;conscious eating&#8221;&#8230; don&#8217;t take away the one thing I cling to &#8211; <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-what-is-it-calorie-counting-defined">calorie counting</a> &#8211; because <em>you</em> think it &#8220;sounds silly.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-basics">Calorie counting</a> empowered me. It taught me the true understanding of what each plate, each dish, each serving and each bite did to my body &#8211; this body, this temple that, although over the years has collected a few piercings and a tattoo or two, I have grown to love and appreciate and admire. It taught me that a handful of my favorite snack food was the calorie equivalent of a hearty lunch. It taught me that my favorite juice drink had the caloric equivalent of what I eat for breakfast. It taught me that it&#8217;s probably not a good idea to get a giant jug of said favorite juice drink and drink it throughout the day.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-creating-your-calorie-goal-and-being-honest-about-it">Calorie counting</a> taught me to understand the relationship between how much I eat in a day, and how much my body burns in that day.</p>
<p>Calorie counting taught me the patterns for identifying &#8220;harmful&#8221; dishes (dishes harmful to my daily calorie count) when I have to dine out.</p>
<p>Calorie counting taught me, in a roundabout way, that the fastest way to fill myself without slaughtering my calorie count was to indulge on vegetables. Calorie counting taught me to come up with creative ways to cook those vegetables, lest I be bored to death by my 365th serving of broccoli.</p>
<p><a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-the-payoff-why-am-i-doing-this-to-myself">Calorie counting</a> gave me a basic foundation that I could use to develop my own understanding of food&#8230; a foundation that I could build from and one day not need to cling to calorie counting anymore.</p>
<p>There are people in this world who have healthy relationships with food. There are people who were born into families who helped teach them that. Considering the number of Americans who are currently overweight, and the number of us who have eating disorders on either extreme of the continuum&#8230; I&#8217;m not sure there are more people with healthier relationships than there are people without.</p>
<p>So, as this challenge draws to a close, I say this:</p>
<p>If you truly participated in the challenge, I hope you re-read this post, take the numbers you collected and really evaluate your eating habits and start trying to identify your patterns. If you started, became discouraged and stopped&#8230; I implore you to start again, because it may be you who needs to develop this kind of understanding more than anything. If you chose to not participate at all, and find the things I&#8217;ve written even remotely intriguing, perhaps giving it a shot for a few days may get you what you desire.</p>
<p>The awareness that I received from <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tag/calorie-counting/">calorie counting</a> is invaluable. It&#8217;s not about nitpicky numbers &#8211; it&#8217;s about the ability to know and identify. It&#8217;s about an awakening and understanding that I never had before. And someone who doesn&#8217;t understand that or just has that &#8220;naturally healthy&#8221; understanding of food will never get that. But I know my needs, and I know my weaknesses. <a href="http://blackgirlsguidetoweightloss.com/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/tools-for-weight-loss/understanding-calorie-counting-a-final-word">Calorie counting</a> helped me cure that, and I hope it could do the same for you.</p>
