That being said… take a look at the commercial… and share your thoughts in the comments!

Meanwhile… I’m gonna share a few reasons why you shouldn’t ever – ever, ever, ever, ever, ever – drink Pepsi Max… or any other soft drink, for that matter.

Want more information on the ad? From the PepsiCo release:

PepsiCo’s Doritos and Pepsi MAX brands gave six of their fans the chance to showcase their talent on the world’s biggest advertising stage when they aired three consumer-created Doritos commercials and three consumer-created Pepsi MAX commercials during today’s Super Bowl XLV broadcast. This year marked the first time in the five year history of the Crash the Super Bowl consumer-created ad contest that a total of six ads received airtime during the big game. The six winning ads included (in alphabetical order):

“First Date” (Pepsi MAX) by Nick Simotas

“House Sitting” (Doritos) by Tynesha Williams

“Love Hurts” (Pepsi MAX) by Brad Bosley

“Pug Attack” (Doritos) by JR Burningham

“The Best Part” (Doritos) by Tyler Dixon

“Torpedo Cooler” (Pepsi MAX) by Brendan Hayward

The six winning ads were among 10 finalists selected by the Doritos and Pepsi MAX brands from more than 5,600 submissions received as part of the contest – the most ever in a single year of competition. Four of the six spots that aired during the Super Bowl broadcast were selected through consumer voting – two for Doritos and two for Pepsi MAX. In addition, Doritos and Pepsi MAX executives each selected a winning spot for their respective brands.

Now, as Crash the Super Bowl enters its final phase, the creators of the six winning ads have their eyes set on achieving Super Bowl advertising history – achieving a full sweep of the top-three rankings of the USA TODAY Ad Meter by consumer-created commercials. If three of the consumer-created Doritos or Pepsi MAX ads accomplish this goal, their creators will take home a shared $5 million prize. In addition to the potential payout, the fan who creates the highest-ranking Doritos or Pepsi MAX ad in the USA TODAY Ad Meter will win a guaranteed contract to create an additional ad for the two brands in 2011.

The ad that we’re checking out today is titled “Love Hurts,” and is described as the following:

“Love Hurts” (Pepsi MAX) – Growing up in Leawood, Kan., 28-year-old Brad Bosley always knew he wanted to be behind the camera directing. When he heard about Crash the Super Bowl, Brad felt this could be just the creative challenge and big break he was looking for. In “Love Hurts,” a girlfriend resorts to unsympathetic tactics to keep her boyfriend from indulging in unhealthy foods. One day she is pleased to find him enjoying a zero-calorie, maximum taste Pepsi MAX … until he steals a glance at another woman and she unleashes an unexpected conclusion to the spot that delivers maximum laughs. [source]

Once I saw this on The Today Show, I knew I’d have to share it here:

Now, I don’t remember everything from my time working in a restaurant, but the [not-so-funny] thing about this is cooking your meats only kills the bacteria that speeds up the rotting process, no? It doesn’t necessarily kill the bacteria that could grow within the product and make you ill.

This is another reason why trying to eat locally (and support restaurants that purchase their ingredients locally) – minimal transfer and transporting time. There’s nothing more traumatizing than hearing “they do it on purpose – running the refrigerator costs more fuel.”

The fact that the second day of investigations yielded NO law-breakers lets us know that they are capable of abiding by the rules… they’re just not.

So what can you do?

You can start with trying to support your local farms via CSAs (community supported agriculture) and farmers’ markets.

You can follow up with visiting well-kept grocery stores that support local agriculture – that way, even if they are, for some strange and foolish reason, still only importing food without refrigerating it, it won’t have had to travel two thousand miles to get there.

Support mostly restaurants that make it a point to talk about how they get their produce from local sources.

And, lastly, cut down on the amount of out-of-season fruits and veggies you consume. Please don’t think your avocados in December are being home-grown in Snowville, USA. It’s just not financially wise nor is it sensible.

Thoughts?

Paula Deen gave an interview on the Today Show with Al Roker this morning about her rumored diagnosis…that was reported by National Enquirer earlier last year, but with no response from her or her team.

From Today.com:

Queen of comfort cuisine Paula Deen confirmed to Al Roker Tuesday that she has type-2 diabetes.

In her first broadcast interview discussing the disease, Deen said she intentionally kept the diagnosis secret after discovering she had it during a routine physical three years ago. “I came home, I told my children, I told my husband, I said, ‘I’m gonna keep this close to my chest for the time being’ because I had to figure out things in my own head,” she told Roker on TODAY.

Rumors that the 64-year-old Southern cook suffers from the disease have been persistent. The National Enquirer first reported the diagnosis in April 2010. Deen neither confirmed nor denied the reports – until now.

“I’m here today to let the world know that it is not a death sentence,” said the Food Network star, who is now being paid as a spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company that supplies her diabetes medication. Coinciding with her announcement, Deen and her family are appearing in a new ad campaign for the company this month.

The news puts a spotlight on Deen, who has been criticized for promoting the type of high-fat, high-sugar diet that leads to weight gain – a major factor believed to cause type-2 diabetes. Deen says her reputation wasn’t the reason she kept the diagnosis under wraps.

“No. People are not going to quit eating; we quit eating, we’re all out of here,” Deen said. “I wanted to bring something to the table when I came forward.”

When asked about whether she will make a change in how she cooks on her show, “Paula’s Best Dishes,” Deen didn’t give a direct answer, instead encouraging viewers to practice moderation.

“Here’s the thing, you know, I’ve always encouraged moderation,” she said. “On my show, you know, I share with you all these yummy, fattening recipes, but I tell people ‘in moderation… You can have that little piece of pie …’”

Deen told USA Today that since the diagnosis, she walks on the treadmill and quit drinking sweet tea. “That’s a big trick for a little Southern girl,” she told the paper. “I calculated how much sugar I drank in empty calories, and it was staggering. I would start drinking tea at lunchtime and drank it all the way to bedtime.”

When asked by Roker about changes to her own diet, Deen emphasized her moderation mantra.

“I have always eaten in moderation,” she said. “You know, people see me on TV two or three times a day and they see me cooking all these wonderfully Southern, fattening dishes. That’s only 30 days out of 365,” she said. “And it’s for entertainment. And people have to be responsible. Like I told Oprah a few years ago, honey, I’m your cook, not your doctor. You are going to have to be responsible for yourself.”

Deen, who told TODAY.com last year that she couldn’t do without butter or a deep-fryer, was called out by fellow food personality Anthony Bourdain in a TV Guide article for being “the worst, most dangerous person to America,” who “revels in her unholy connections with evil corporations” and is “proud of the fact that her food is f—ing bad for you.”

Deen responded, telling the New York Post, “Anthony Bourdain needs to get a life.” Positioning herself as relatable to the home cook, she added, “Not everybody can afford to pay $58 for prime rib or $650 for a bottle of wine. My friends and I cook for regular families who worry about feeding their kids and paying the bills.”

Bourdain, who says he was flooded by requests for quotes after news of Deen’s announcement leaked, shared his reaction with Eater.com. “When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you’ve been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you’ve got type 2 diabetes… It’s in bad taste if nothing else.”

While Deen will continue cooking her fatty comfort meals on her show, her son Bobby has been promoting lower-calorie versions of his mom’s recipes (sans the butter and heavy cream), with his new Cooking Channel show, “Not My Mama’s Meals.”

I’ve said everything I have to say about this. I did want to follow up with this and the video because when I wrote about it, it was only rumored, and I was fully prepared to eat my hat. You don’t wish this on anyone, and I would’ve rather ate my hat than have to watch this video of her admitting this… and quite frankly, I couldn’t even watch it all. I stopped it a minute and 15 seconds in.

“You are a paid spokesperson, though…”

“Absolutely, I have been compensated just as you have been compensated for your work.”

Uh …huh.

I’m gonna go grab a barf bag. Your thoughts, though?

Many people tout the personal health benefits of clean eating – weight loss, improved energy levels, decreased instances of illness – but one small (yet huge) facet of clean eating involves the health of our environment. This concept is called “reducing your carbon footprint.”

What is your “carbon footprint?” It’s a clever way of describing the impact your daily activities have on your environment. If you drive an hour long commute, the amount of oil burned and emissions released from your car have an impact. The amount of energy your home uses also has an impact. Obviously (and unfortunately), some things we simply cannot compromise. If you have to drive that commute, you have to do what you have to do.

However.. you know what has an impact that also is easily reduced? Trash generated from food and drinks. If you are truly reducing the amount of processed food in your life, you should notice that there are less boxes and cans for you to have to throw away… especially if you’re not already recycling. Cutting back on the processed food not only benefits your health, but it reduces the amount of trash you generate which is sooooo much better for the environment.

What am I getting at, here? Simple. The one most wasteful, most useless, most pointless source of trash in the United States… is bottled water.

I can hear you now…

“But… [insert excuse]..”

…no. Watch the video. At work? The transcript is pasted below for your reading enjoyment.

One of the problems with trying to use less stuff is that sometimes we feel like we really need it. What if you live in a city like, say, Cleveland and you want a glass of water? Are you going to take your chances and get it from the city tap? Or should you reach for a bottle of water that comes from the pristine rainforests of… Fiji?

Well, Fiji brand water thought the answer to this question was obvious. So they built a whole ad campaign around it. It turned out to be one of the dumbest moves in advertising history.

See the city of Cleveland didn’t like being the butt of Fiji’s joke so they did some tests and guess what? These tests showed a glass of Fiji water is lower quality, it loses taste tests against Cleveland tap and costs thousands of times more.

This story is typical of what happens when you test bottled water against tap water.

Is it cleaner? Sometimes, sometimes not: in many ways, bottled water is less regulated than tap.

Is it tastier? In taste tests across the country, people consistently choose tap over bottled water.
These bottled water companies say they’re just meeting consumer demand – But who would demand a less sustainable, less tasty, way more expensive product, especially one you can get almost free in your kitchen? Bottled water costs about 2000 times more than tap water. Can you imagine paying 2000 times the price of anything else? How about a $10,000 sandwich?

Yet people in the U.S. buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week. That’s enough to circle the globe more than times. How did this come to be? Well it all goes back to how our materials economy works and one of its key drivers which is known as manufactured demand.

If companies want to keep growing, they have to keep selling more and more stuff. In the 1970s giant soft drink companies got worried as their growth projections started to level off. There’s only so much soda a person can drink. Plus it wouldn’t be long before people began realizing that soda is not that healthy and turned back to – gasp – drinking tap water.

Well, the companies found their next big idea in a silly designer product that most people laughed at as a passing yuppie fad. Water is free, people said back then, what will they sell us next, air?

So how do you get people to buy this fringe product? Simple: You manufacture demand. How do you do that? Well, imagine you’re in charge of a bottled water company.

Since people aren’t lining up to trade their hard earned money for your unnecessary product, you make them feel scared and insecure if they don’t have it. And that’s exactly what the bottled water industry did. One of their first marketing tactics was to scare people about tap water, with ads like Fiji’s Cleveland campaign.

“When we’re done,” one top water exec said, “tap water will be relegated to showers and washing dishes.”
Next, you hide the reality of your product behind images of pure fantasy. Have you ever noticed how bottled water tries to seduce us with pictures of mountains streams and pristine nature? But guess where a third of all bottled water in the U.S. actually comes from? The tap! Pepsi’s Aquafina and Coke’s Dasani are two of the many brands that are really filtered tap water.

But the pristine nature lie goes much deeper. In a recent full page ad, Nestlé said: “bottled water is the most environmentally responsible consumer product in the world.” What?! They’re trashing the environment all along the product’s life cycle. Exactly how is that environmentally responsible?

The problems start here with extraction and production where oil is used to make water bottles. Each year, making the plastic water bottles used in the U.S. takes enough oil and energy to fuel a million cars.
All that energy spent to make the bottle even more to ship it around the planet and then we drink it in about 2 minutes? That brings us to the big problem at the other end of the life cycle – disposal.
What happens to all these bottles when we’re done? Eighty percent end up in landfills, where they will sit for thousands of years, or in incinerators, where they are burned, releasing toxic pollution. The rest gets collected for recycling.

I was curious about where the plastic bottles that I put in recycling bins go. I found out that shiploads were being sent to India. So, I went there. I’ll never forget riding over a hill outside Madras where I came face to face with a mountain of plastic bottles from California. Real recycling would turn these bottles back into bottles. But that wasn’t what was happening here. Instead these bottles were slated to be downcycled, which means turning them into lower quality products that would just be chucked later. The parts that couldn’t be downcycled were thrown away there; shipped all the way to India just to be dumped in someone else’s backyard.

If bottled water companies want to use mountains on their labels, it’d be more accurate to show one of those mountains of plastic waste.

Scaring us, seducing us, and misleading us – these strategies are all core parts of manufacturing demand.
Once they’ve manufactured all this demand, creating a new multibillion dollar market, they defend it by beating out the competition. But in this case, the competition is our basic human right to clean, safe drinking water.

Pepsi’s Vice Chairman publicly said “the biggest enemy is tap water!” They want us to think it’s dirty and bottled water is the best alternative.

In many places, public water is polluted thanks to polluting industries like the plastic bottle industry! And these bottled water guys are all too happy to offer their expensive solution which keeps us hooked on their product.

It’s time we took back the tap.

That starts with making a personal commitment to not buy or drink bottled water unless the water in your community is truly unhealthy. Yes, it takes a bit of foresight to grab a reusable bottle on the way out, but I think we can handle it.

Then take the next step — join a campaign that’s working for real solutions. Like demanding investment in clean tap water for all. In the US, tap water is underfunded by $24 billion partly because people believe drinking water only comes from a bottle! Around the world, a billion people don’t have access to clean water right now. Yet cities all over are spending millions of dollars to deal with all the plastic bottles we throw out. What if we spent that money improving our water systems or better yet, preventing pollution to begin with?

There are many more things we can do to solve this problem. Lobby your city officials to bring back drinking fountains. Work to ban the purchase of bottled water by your school, organization or entire city.
This is a huge opportunity for millions of people to wake up and protect our wallets, our health and the planet. The good news is: it’s already started.

Bottled water sales have begun to drop while business is booming for safe refillable water bottles. Yay!
Restaurants are proudly serving “tap” and people are choosing to pocket the hundred or thousands of dollars they would otherwise be wasting on bottled water. Carrying bottled water is on its way to being as cool as smoking while pregnant. We know better now.

The bottled water industry is getting worried because the jig is up. We’re not buying into their manufactured demand anymore. We’ll choose our own demands, thank you very much, and we’re demanding clean safe water for all. [source - The Story of Bottled Water (Annotated/Footnoted Script)]

You may not believe 100% of what this video and transcript present but, if nothing else, it should make you think. As we focus this week on increasing our water intake, think about it – are you using bottled water to get by? Are you wasting your money (and, at the same time, complaining about the cost of living healthily?) Well, don’t. This is one expense that you could stand to avoid. If you’re in an area that really and truly has horrible water (which, believe it or not, isn’t as common as you’d think), buy the giant gallon jugs and recycle them. Research the brand you’re buying, and make sure that they’re not serving you the same tap water you think you’re escaping.. but those little bottles are wasteful and unnecessary.. seriously.

Buy yourself an awesome and attractive water container, and keep it on hand. Keep it full! Keep drinking it! And most importantly… keep refilling it! I promise that both your body and your Earth will thank you for it!

(Are you a subscriber? You’ll definitely want to come watch the video!)

I’m not a junk foodie anymore. I mean, mind you – I have my fair share of cookies and cupcakes… but I don’t find value in junk food anymore. I don’t judge those who do.. it just doesn’t have the same hold on me that it used to, and because of that.. I have very little desire to “test it.”

I’ll be following this up all day with the rest of the videos from the series, so be sure to keep checking back.

Some quotes to keep your ears peeled for:

“Don’t think there aren’t flavor scientists sitting in a lab trying to figure out how to make this burger addictive..”

“I don’t know if ‘satisfied’ is the word as much as ‘stuffed’…”

“I’ll eat something that tastes really, really good, and then fifteen minutes later I’ll feel sluggish…”

Definitely food for thought, no pun intended.

I’ve spoken on this before, and no one ever hears me: companies that seek to create big name products will invest millions upon millions of dollars to create the irresistible flavor that will please enough people that the brand will last for ages. It’s cheaper than, say, real spices or real herbs or even real food and, quite frankly, people are buying it all up.

That is, until they start packing on the pounds. Then, they turn to Nutrisystem. (Are you cringing yet? I am.)

When I heard that 60 Minutes covered Givaudan, I couldn’t help but wonder what you guys would think. Check out the video below, and share your thoughts.

Here’s what Huffington Post had to say:

Natural and artificial flavoring are known components of many foods, but the process on how they come to be is something of a closely guarded secret. The 60 Minutes team was given access to Givaudan, one of the biggest flavoring companies, and aired a fascinating — and startling — segment on the company last night.

Givaudan may be the biggest multinational company you’ve never heard of, explains correspondent Morley Safer. It employees 9,000 people in 45 countries. Givaudan employees admit that they aim to mimic Mother Nature with chemicals. They create flavors that don’t linger too long — that way, you’ll want to go back for more. “There’s a lot of secrecy,” confesses one employee. The company won’t reveal which brands contain Givaudan flavors.

Another employee explains that although both artificial and natural flavors are both chemical combinations, artificial flavors are largely man-made. Natural flavors come from nature, but that doesn’t mean they come from what the label says. In other words, a strawberry flavor doesn’t have to come from a strawberry (ditto on french fries).

Thoughts?

I couldn’t find much info about the show, but the Wiki for it provided a bit of info:

Supersize vs Superskinny is a British television programme on Channel 4 that features information about dieting and extreme eating lifestyles. One of the main show features is a weekly comparison between an overweight person, and an underweight person. The two are brought to a feeding clinic, and live together for five days, swapping diets all supervised by Dr Christian Jessen.

The show also featured Anna Richardson in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd series, who examined new methods to lose weight by trying diets she finds on the Internet, some of which have shocking side effects. For example, Anna attempted Laser lipolysis, which went drastically wrong and resulted in severe bruising. Also, she discovered Diabulimia and spoke to Isabelle Caro, a French actress, renowned for her underweight figure and anorexia campaign.

Since the poop burger was, apparently, some kind of elaborate hoax – and thank goodness, though considering what I know about meat production out here, I wouldn’t be surprised – I feel obligated to provide a second belated Weekend WTF?! for your enjoyment.

This isn’t even an “outraged” WTF?!…. it’s just a “sit there, laugh, pull out your receipt and shake your head” kind of WTF?!, here.

I was particularly interested in what Whole Foods’ response would be to this because, as the following mentions, they’re pretty strict about photography and camera work on their property. Apparently, they were pretty cool about it:

Using just a Canon 5D and a group of talented friends, they shot without permission at various locations. “Whole Foods has a strict policy about not shooting, and they asked us very politely to leave… but we shot enough at three different locations on no budget.”

The stores may not have wanted them to shoot, from the corporate point of view, it’s all good. Sirr Less, the global VP of Communications at Whole Foods – whose name instantly makes one think of Sir Mix a Lot, being on this tangent — had this to say: “Creativity like this always resonates with our company, and we take it as a big compliment…” While he’s happy that they’re happy, Wittman is adamant this was not some sort of infomercial. “It was not something I did to promote Whole Foods or promote Kombucha; we just did it to have fun.” And Whole Foods is thrilled; the attitude of the grocery store chain is a healthy one (excuse the pun) when it comes to Fog and Smog’s parody of the healthful living they have turned into big business. “Nobody makes more fun of us than we do of ourselves, but we’re always happy to see someone do it in a novel way. While we’re serious about good food, healthy living and selling groceries, we also believe that laughter is the sweetest thing — and these guys get that!” Less said.

In some moments this past week, Wittman’s been a bit turned off as people have approached the group to create the same sort of thing for their brands, but that was never the intention of doing the video. “The point of it was being honest and funny. I’m a grown man, I have a day job. I’m not gonna sit here and say I don’t need to work for a living, because I do, so I can afford that $80 bucks for six things [watch the video and you’ll understand]. But I also wanna be conscious of it. So the irony is that this video I made, is saying that.”[source]

Can’t say I’m surprisd others wanted the “Parking Lot Video Pimpin’” treatment. This video has gotten lots of attention.

Seen on The Today Show this morning:

Just as you were starting to feel virtuous for having switched from sugary sodas to low- or no-calorie substitutes, a new study comes along suggesting that diet sodas might be bad for your head and your heart.

The study, which followed more than 2,500 New Yorkers for nine or more years, found that people who drank diet soda every day had a 61 percent higher risk of vascular events, including stroke and heart attack, than those who completely eschewed the diet drinks, according to researchers who presented their results today at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles.

Still, the researchers aren’t ready to tell consumers to skip diet sodas. More studies need to be done before that happens, said the report’s lead author Hannah Gardener, an epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

“I think diet soda drinkers need to stay tuned,” Gardener said. “I don’t think that anyone should be changing their behaviors based on one study. Hopefully this will motivate other researchers to do more studies.”

That advice may not stop some from skipping their diet drinks. “This is pretty scary,” said Denise Gainey, a 49-year-old administrative assistant from Amelia, Va. Worried that she might have inherited a higher risk of heart disease, Gainey wants to be careful. “I guess I’ll just be drinking a lot more water,” she said.

For the new study, researchers surveyed 2,564 north Manhattan residents about their eating behaviors, exercise habits, as well as cigarette and alcohol consumption. The study volunteers were also given physical check-ups that included blood pressure measurements and blood tests for cholesterol and other factors that might affect the risk for heart attack and stroke.

The increased likelihood of vascular events remained even after Gardener and her colleagues accounted for risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Pointing the finger more squarely at diet drinks, the researchers found no increased risk among people who drank regular soda.

Does this mean there’s something in diet sodas that hurts our blood vessels? Nobody knows the answer to that question, yet, Gardener said. There could be something else that people who drink diet sodas have in common, she explained.

For example, it’s possible that people who drink diet sodas are replacing those saved sugar calories with other unhealthy choices, Gardener said.

That explanation makes a lot of sense to Dr. Nehal N. Mehta, director of inflammatory risk cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Although the researchers know the total calories study volunteers were consuming, they weren’t able to account for unhealthy eating habits, Mehta said.

“Maybe along with the diet soda, people are grabbing a Big Mac and a large fries,” Mehta said. “Soda may not be the villain. It may be the other things people consume in association with diet soda. After all, what goes better with pizza or fries than a soda?”

That said, it is always possible that there is something about diet soda that leads to vascular problems, Mehta said, adding that this is the second study to associate diet soda with health issues. An earlier study found that diet soda consumption was linked to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which is also a risk factor for heart problems and stroke.

Caramel coloring linked to vascular issues

Further, Mehta said, there are animal studies suggesting a link between vascular problems and caramel-containing products. Among other things, caramel is the ingredient that gives the dark color to sodas like Coke and Pepsi, he explained.

Despite all of that, you probably don’t want to give up diet soda until — and if — larger studies confirm the results of this one, Mehta said.

That is, unless you’re someone with a lot of risk factors for stroke or heart disease, said Dr. Tudor Jovin, an associate professor of neurology and medicine and director of the Stroke Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

“People with a lot of risk factors for vascular disease, might want to reduce the amount of diet soda they consume,” Jovin said. “Those risk factors would include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, a family history of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and a history of cardiovascular events.”

So, in other words… this edible substance, completely devoid of any nutritional benefit… not only cannot provide you with any nourishment or improve your health, but actually may have the ability to cause you harm by way of those heinous chemicals listed in the ingredients?

We knew this already, right?

But what’s so bizarre to me, really, is the fact that nooooooooooooooobody in the video wanted to just come out and say it: leave the damn chemicals alone!

I’ll be writing my thoughts on this up a little later… but for now, what are yours?

Eva said:

I think EVERYBODY should watch “America The Beautiful.” on Hulu (it’s still there, I watched it yesterday).

…and I agree.

Have at it:

America The Beautiful is a product of Darryl Roberts, a man of color, who wrote the following for Huffington Post back in 2008:

I recently had the good fortune of being invited to screen my documentary America the Beautiful, at the Shaped Body Symposium in Vienna, Austria, a global body image conference, which included professors, health professionals, and government representatives from all over the world. This was the European premiere of my film and I was really looking forward to hearing the European perspective on body image issues.

After screening the film for the conference, I sat on an impressive panel with some of Europe’s most outspoken activists on body image issues, and listened to them discuss the issues explored in my film.

German Fashion photographer Inge Prader is on the frontlines of this battle. Prader explained that the pressure on models in Paris is getting worse and noted that some have gone so far as to swallow cotton balls to lose weight.

This got me thinking about the dangerous consequences of the images of air-brushed, too-thin women flashing across television screens and appearing on every other page of magazines which target impressionable teenage girls. Then I thought of the advertising industry dictating to us what we should find beautiful and selling us cosmetics designed to “make” ourselves beautiful.

As economic globalization becomes a reality, it seems that the language of beauty changes along with it. Those air-brushed women now appear on televisions in Toledo, Ohio and Toledo, Spain, and in magazines sold in Paris, Texas and Paris, France.

I don’t know if we can pin it all on advertising and the media, but there is no doubt in my mind that it plays a significant part in hastening the scourge of body image issues and the rise in eating disorders all around the planet at an alarming rate. This brings me to what I like to call the “Fiji Phenomenon.”

You see in Fiji, set apart from Western Society by a large expanse of the Pacific Ocean, television didn’t exist until 1995. Because feeding their communities was of primary concern to Fijians, the culture celebrated larger body types. Those who appeared to be well-fed (and more well-to-do) were looked upon as the most beautiful. To put it simply, “thin was not in.”

Prior to the introduction of television and Western media, a Harvard study led by Dr. Anne Becker, found that eating disorders in Fiji did not exist. But after three years of broadcasting Western programming guess what happened?

Sadly by 1998, over 70% of young women surveyed admitted that they had a negative body image, 60% of the young women surveyed admitted to dieting, and somewhere around 11% admitted bulimic behaviors. I found this phenomenon shocking. Terrifying even.

Does media and advertising really have that strong of an affect on how we see ourselves? It is hard to ignore a study conducted by the vaunted Harvard School of Medicine — especially when the study finds that in a short three years, there was a larger proportion of dieting adolescents in Fiji than in Massachusetts!

While my film America The Beautiful deals primarily with the rise in body image issues and companion eating disorders in the American society, I felt absolutely compelled to include a segment of the film highlighting the “Fiji Phenomenon.” Unfortunately, some of the negative aspects of our society have been exported along with the good.

Attending the Shaped Body conference again reminded me, that it is not just American women who are suffering with body image issues and eating disorders. To be sure, it is not only American women who are bombarded with a notion of beauty that is unrealistic and dangerous.

Fellow panel member, and long-time health expert for the World Health Organization in Switzerland, Professor Ilona Kickbusch noted that in this digital age, pictures travel globally with great ease. She stressed that in order to curb this problem it is imperative to take political action. And you know what? She is absolutely right.

This is a global pandemic. From Japan and China, to India and Iraq, to Nigeria and South Africa, to Vienna to Milan — women from every corner of the globe are fighting this growing problem. And the question is, what are we going to do about it?

Perhaps if we took Professor Kickbusch’s advice and tackled this problem using the political apparatus we could actually make a difference. Remember how people laughed ten years ago at the notion of passing a public smoking ban? Hell, fifteen years ago they even thought banning smoking on airplanes would never fly. With political support and money behind the movement, look how quickly things have changed. Public smoking bans have gone into effect in cities across the United States and abroad. So why can’t body image issues and eating disorders be dealt with in similar fashion?

In fact, that is just what the Italian government had in mind when in March of this year they introduced a $1.5 Million (USD) campaign against eating disorders. This was largely in response to the fact upwards of 3 million Italians are afflicted with eating disorders.

While the modeling industry in Milan has become notorious for promoting images of starving women with invisible waistlines as the pinnacle of beauty, it was the Italian people and government who finally said enough is enough.

In 2006, the Milanese fashion industry, caving to political pressure, agreed to set limits on their models. Models with a Body Mass Index less than 18 are no longer allowed to walk down the runway in Milan. It is also now illegal to model in Milan under the age of 16 and models are expected to show medical proof that they are in good health.

Being on the panel with Anna Maria Fecchio-Comito, a representative of Italy’s Federal Youth Ministry, I heard first hand what kind of political action can be taken. Fecchio-Comito’s Ministry has helped to promote, and now police, a recent ban on newspapers and television stations showing women who are under a size 4-6. Like many of us, she wants the media to be responsible and provide the public with realistic images of women.

In fact, also on the panel was Karin Knufmann-Happe, from the Federal Ministry of Health in Germany. He said that the Italian legislation provided a great model and made passing legislation there in Germany much easier.

So just some food for though — If limits can be set on the modeling industry and media in Italy and Germany, why can’t we propose some limits on advertising and the media right here in the United Sates in the name of public health?

Is it right for a teenage girl, a child, to be inundated with images of unattainable “perfection” that studies have shown encourage body image issues and eating disorders, right in the pages of magazines like Seventeen, that are directly marketed to children? It’s time for someone to sit down and draft some legislation that will tackle this growing problem.

I have come to believe that with enough voices and enough support we can make a difference. Write your congressmen, write your senators — write your new president! Let them know that: A.) this problem exists; and, B.) we need to do something about it! [source]

It’s important for me to cover The Photoshop Diet and Booty Paint because, quite frankly, I run a blog centered around one woman changing her body. I run a blog that attracts women changing their bodies… and some of those women idolize people and photos that have been so thoroughly altered that the only way living people could achieve such a size would be to take drastic measures.

It just feels like if I’m going to host conversations about weight loss, that I should ensure that we all have realistic expectations about our lives and our bodies… and that includes holding up real models of fitness, not altered visuals. So often, we grab magazines, scan the covers and quickly whine “Why can’t I look like that?” before throwing the mag back into its slot and reaching for a candy bar to calm us down. Both situations are wrong for two separate reasons, and both can be easily addressed. Leave the damn candy alone, and look for more realistic models of fitness… and step away from the purveyors of your photoshop diet fix. It ain’t worth it.

On Weighty Matters, I caught a glimpse of the above video and I’m quite happy to present it to you today. (Subscribers, it’s a short flick but it’s very worth the click. Didn’t mean to rhyme, but it was quite on time. Okay, I’ll stop now.)

Whenever we talk about marketers, their reach out to children and “advertisers,” the phrase “parental responsibility” always comes up…. and don’t get me wrong – I get it. That’s another reason why I appreciate this video – it mentions ways that marketers reach our children without actually doing so in a blatant fashion. Brand placement in kids movies? “Thank you, Pepsi?!” Dude. Just… no.

It’s not about “stop letting your kids watch too much TV” if your ads are plastered in the windows of the grocery stores near a child’s school bus stop. It’s not about “be a parent and stop putting your child in front of a TV every day” if when you take your child out, the cartoon is painted on the slide at the playground. It’s not about my inability to parent if buying soft drinks and carrying around that god-awful plastic bottle has become a status symbol among the students at school. They don’t even like Mountain Dew, but they’ll buy it and carry it around just to let you know they’ve got money to blow… and you don’t, with your poor self.

Suing the NYC Department of Health? Seriously? I wonder if the industry’s displeasure with the law has anything to do with why the USDA prevented NYC from going forward with it.

To someone who is constantly aware of the fact that they used to be a food addict – me – who used to binge on some of these foods… seeing them target the kids is a little nauseating.

So sayeth the video… we’re not buying it.

Are there any other ways marketers reach children that we haven’t mentioned here? Do you think this is excessive? What do you think?

My puppy, Sushi, as she guards my pole!

This video? This video is awesome.

I know that I wrote last year about my very first pole dancing class… and I’ve got to admit it’s a ton of fun and yes, I am still a poler.

(As a side note, I don’t know that I’m mature enough to write these posts. I keep wanting to call myself a pole lover, a pole girl… I’m just… I’m not mature enough. I’m sorry.)

That being said, it was nice to know that the folks at CBS Sunday Morning aren’t mature enough either, as they got in a few giggle-worthy lines during their coverage of the US Pole Dance Championship that took place a little while back. Check out the video here:

And, while I must admit that I cringed a little when the dance instructor said “Mothers bring their daughters in to help them feel sexier,” because when we talk about “Mother and daughter” in this country, our first inclination is to think of 35yo Mom and 13yo daughter… but it’s often the 47yo Mom and the 25yo daughter who come together. At least, I hope that’s what she meant.

Anyway… tell me that video isn’t awesome?

…and just try and tell me you weren’t impressed when Madame Butterfly walked in the air. Just try. Because you’d be a full-blooded lie.

Note for subscribers: You’ll definitely want to visit the site to view this video!

I hate to say I told you so, buuuuut…. pardon me as I take a little time to do my ‘I told you so!” dance. It looks a lot like “The Tootsie Roll.”

This video illustrates it far better than I could ever do with mere words.

A few notes on what’s being highlighted in this video:

On Sucralose:

Splenda is made by chlorinated sugar, changing its molecular structure. The finished product is called sucralose. The makers of this poison tout its lack of calories and claim it’s safe for diabetics. The FDA calls sucralose 98 percent pure. The other 2 percent contains small amounts of heavy metals, methanol, and arsenic. Well gee, at least it doesn’t have any calories. So what if it has a little arsenic? Sucralose has been found to cause diarrhea; organ, genetic, immune system, and reproductive damage; swelling of the liver and kidneys: and a decrease in fetal body weight.

Excerpted from The Case Against Diet Soda (And Aspartame… And Splenda.. And….) | A Black Girl’s Guide To Weight Loss

On “Partially Hydrogenated Soybean/Palm/Kernel Oil”:

A lot of us might not even know what “zero trans fats!!111!11!1″ even actually means, but if we see it on a package we might not’ve bought otherwise… it just might be enough to make us buy.

Not only is that horrible shopping practice (I do admit I was guilty once), but it’s a little dangerous.

What is trans fat, you ask? Well, you might see it in your foods’ ingredient list as “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” or “partially hydrogenated soybean oil.” It’s an oil (usually vegetable or soybean oil) that has hydrogen gas whipped into it, making it a thick and super creamy substance. This was a part of the original process used to create margarine, meant to replace butter because the saturated fats found in butter were considered so harmful. The trans fats that originated were an unintended consequence. Eventually, we found out that this “unintended consequence” was way more harmful than butter ever could be, leaving us exposed to heart disease.

The stuff can be found in lots of junk – margarine (of course), crackers, some thick and creamy items, and some inexpensive cakes/cookies/pastries. Anything with a thick, rich, buttery, creamy taste to it may more than likely have it.

Why is the “zero trans fat!!!1!1!!111!” claim on this list? Well, here’s why:

The FDA says a person shouldn’t ingest more than 2.5 grams of trans fat a day. (How about just telling people to avoid it altogether? I bet I know why…) A loophole in the FDA’s requirements states that if a food item has less than .5 grams of trans fat in it, it can safely claim that it has ZERO trans fat. There are two problems with this: 1, if each food on my plate has .49 grams of trans fat, I might not even know I’m eating 2 grams of trans fat; 2, what about people who eat more than one serving of an item?

Here’s an example. A box of Ritz crackers will tell you that a serving size is 5 crackers, and that is has 0grams trans fat. If you pick up the box of Ritz with the “fresh wrap” packages – the ones with, maybe, 15 crackers in an individually wrapped package – it will undoubtedly tell you that if you eat a whole package in one sitting, you’re eating something like 3 grams of trans fat.

“But I thought 1 serving has no trans fat?”

I know. It’s crap, right?

How can you avoid this? Even though it might say “0 grams trans fat” on the front and in the nutrition information, the ingredients list will always tell the real tale. It will always say “partially hydrogenated [insert vegetable, soybean, whatever] oil” inside that list. Keep an eye out for it.

Excerpted from Supermarket Swindle: Two Things To Avoid On Your Food Labels | A Black Girl’s Guide To Weight Loss
